Beamer puts LSU at top, but Miles still has Tigers at No. 2
By Glenn Guilbeau
BATON ROUGE - Many voters - coaches and media members alike - have changed their minds about No. 2 LSU since its 48-7 victory over No. 9 Virginia Tech Saturday.
LSU remains No. 2 in both national wire service polls, but many believe the Tigers are No. 1 and have voted likewise.
Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer voted LSU No. 1 in the USA Today coaches poll.
"I certainly was impressed with LSU," Beamer said on his weekly teleconference. "Impressed enough that I had them No. 2 in my poll last week and I made them No. 1."
Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill believes, too. His team (0-2) plays the Tigers (2-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday in Tiger Stadium.
"I voted for them No. 1," Stockstill said at his weekly press conference. "They are very talented, have a ton of depth, a physical offense and a physical defense. I think they are playing as good as anybody."
But LSU coach Les Miles still has the Tigers where he had them before the season - No. 3.
"It's top secret," Miles kidded before revealing his weekly vote in the USA Today poll. "I know they put it in the paper, but it's top secret."
Then he listed his teams.
"USC is No. 1. Florida is No. 2," he said. "And a very strong team is No. 3."
