Honey Badger, 3 other former LSU players arrested

Four former LSU football players, including former Heisman finalist Tyrann "Honey Badger" Mathieu, were arrested Thursday on drug-related offenses, according to a press release from the Baton Rouge, La., police.

Mathieu, former starting quarterback Jordan Jefferson and former defensive backs Karnell Hatcher and Derrick Bryant were on charges ranging from possession of marijuana to possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, according to the release.

The arrests were first reported by Baton Rouge TV station WAFB.

This the latest misstep for Mathieu, who was dismissed from the LSU football program in August after repeated violations of the school's substance abuse policy for athletes.

Mathieu, along with cornerback Tharold Simon and running back Spencer Ware, was suspended for a game against Auburn last October after testing positive for synthetic marijuana. Another failed drug test led LSU and head coach Les Miles to remove Mathieu from the team altogether on Aug. 10.

"This is a very difficult day for our team," Miles said at the press conference announcing Mathieu's dismissal.

"He was a quality, quality guy. He had behavior issues. The overview of his time with us is positive."

The former all-American cornerback had since reenrolled at the school, taking classes in hopes of returning to the team for the 2013 season. Jefferson was a multiple-year starter at quarterback for LSU. He led the Tigers to the SEC championship and a spot in the BCS National Championship Game as a senior.

The arrests occurred on Thursday afternoon after officers were sent to a Baton Rouge apartment complex in reference to a man, later identified as Jefferson, attempting to push his way through a security gate, said Baton Rouge police.

Jefferson exchanged words with a maintenance worker before going into an apartment in the complex. Mathieu answered the door to the apartment when police arrived at the scene, according to the police department's news release.

"Officers immediately smelled a strong odor of marijuana and obtained consent from Mathieu to search the apartment", said the release. "Inside they found three other men, including the one who had allegedly tried to force his way through the gate. He was identified as Jordan Jefferson," police said.

The other two individuals in the apartment were identified as Hatcher and Bryant.

A search of the apartment yielded a marijuana grinder, digital scale and 10 bags of high grade marijuana.

Seven of the 10 bags were found inside Bryant's backpack, said police. While Mathieu, Jefferson and Hatcher were charged on possession charges, Bryant was charged with Possession With Intent to Distribute Marijuana.

Honey Badger - smokes what he wants.
He'll never return to LSU football. He needs to stop his fantasy, cut to the chase, and start smoking crack now so he can find the best cardboard box in his new home - the gutter.

Re: Honey Badger, 3 other former LSU players arrested

As another storm of off-the-field problems popped up on the radar at LSU on Thursday, the current Tigers went through their final strenuous workout of the week.

News broke while LSU was at practice that former players Tyrann Mathieu, Jordan Jefferson, Karnell Hatcher and Derrick Bryant were arrested on varying marijuana possession charges at Mathieu's off-campus apartment.

Spokesman Michael Bonnette said the school and athletic department would not issue a statement because the charges involved former players. He declined comment on whether the arrest squashes whatever remaining chance Mathieu had of returning to the program.

A New Orleans native, Mathieu was dismissed from the program on Aug. 10 for what several sources have verified was repeated failure of NCAA and school-administered drug tests. He went through an abbreviated drug treatment program at Houston-based Right Step under the guidance of former NBA star John Lucas. Mathieu enrolled in classes at LSU shortly after Labor Day and recently was the subject of a Sports Illustrated cover story.

It's unclear whether the current players were specifically told to avoid comment on the story.

Center P.J. Lonergan did say Tigers coach Les Miles told the team of the arrests at the end of Thursday's practice.

Another former LSU player, T-Bob Hebert, did talk about the arrests during a segment on Baton Rouge sports radio station ESPN-104.5 FM.

The son of former Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert, T-Bob Hebert played with all four players and was Jefferson's center for his first two seasons as the Tigers starting QB.

"You know these are not bad guys at all," Hebert said. "These guys are my friends. These are guys I've worked with and bled with and really gotten real close to."

Almost as soon as the news hit Thursday, rumbles of a team-wide drug problem surfaced on Twitter.

Hebert was adamant when he shot that notion down.

"I can say without a shadow of a doubt that is not the case," Hebert said. "We are easily one of the most drug-free teams in the SEC. We get tested all the time. Our compliance (department) stays on us."

With the 2012 team on a bye week in preparation of its biggest game of the season when No. 1-ranked Alabama visits Tiger Stadium, Hebert was asked if he thought this latest off-the-field black eye would become a distraction.

"I think guys are like me: They feel bad and are upset, but they've got other stuff on their plate," said Hebert, who remains close to several of his former teammates. "Nobody involved is on the team right now and I think these guys have bigger fish to fry."

Just plain stupid. Mathieu might have had a slim chance of getting to the NFL but now I would think teams are gonna stay away.

Re: Honey Badger, 3 other former LSU players arrested

He is a selfish, stupid, piece of crap; that can't see past his own greatness. This is "black eye" #2 he has given the University and I for one hope they kick him so far out of B.R. that he can never enter the Parrish again. All he is now is another wasted talent and will be a "30 for 30" episode in 10 years. I will bet my retirement he ends up with a long term prison sentence before he dies. I hope he is never allowed to even put on a purple t-shirt again in his life!

I have no pity for this P.O.S. and I hope it gets all he has worked so hard to get.
