Re: Alabama OC Doug Nussmeier to Michigan

Hard to say whether or not he was a good OC or not. He was working with superior talent and Alabama and the name "Nick Saban" pretty much recruits itself. I don't expect to see the same Nussmeier at Alabama in Michigan. Nick Saban is more conservative and influential in how Bama's offense was run. So while he was running his offense, I'm guessing it had it's limitations on how it was ran.

So while there's plenty of name recognition to Michigan's hire, it not really a loss to Bama and how he performs in Ann Harbor remains to be seen.

That is true. He did have an absurd amount of talent to work with at Bama, but if you look at his past stops, his offenses have always been really productive - especially at Washington. I think Nussmeier should get a lot of credit for turning Jake Locker into a first round pick, but even after Locker left, the offense was even better under Keith Price.

And Michigan does have talent. It is very young talent, but it's there. People can say what they want about Brady Hoke, and he definitely deserves criticism, but he has recruited at a very high level since his arrival.

Also, I think you hit the nail on the head with Saban and how influential he is on how the offense is ran at Bama. I have read that Nussmeier leaving Bama was a mutual parting. Maybe Nuss wanted more control of the offense, and Saban wouldn't give it to him?
Brady Hoke is a defensive minded guy, and he is willing to give total control to his offensive coordinator. I bet that was music to Nussmeier's ears.

Don't forget about the money! Top 5 money as far as assistants are concerned.

You make some good points and I do think having full reigns to an offense was a big seller in him leaving. I do think it is a good hire and Nussmeier's offense should be more fun to watch in Michigan than it was at Bama.
