Well...I did get sympathy from SaintFan by posting in my "Chrissy" thread, so the least I can do is post in yours...but your guess was right, as far as I'm concerned. Is that soccer? :)

I watched it and enjoyed the play of USA was really hoping your guys would win it. I like Donovan a lot and that black striker, can't remember his name but the guy has some wheels. Also enjoyed the physical play against Wayne "Shrek" Rooney.

Josy Altidore. 20 year old kid. He seems like the real deal.
Good game. England is good but their keeper is apparently shaky. At least the US got a point out of it.

Watching some of the Portugal match, Ronaldo keeps flopping ... and they wonder why the USA doesn't take this sport seriously

Re: Are you ready for some Futbol?

I watched most of the match, and I was proud of our team, even though we got a gift.

Now, I don't know much about soccer and I'm not a fan. I watch from time to time thinking I'll eventually 'get it'. I just can't get emotionally involved for whatever reason, but while watching the USA and England match it came to me.

See, kids love to play soccer, but it has never taken off professionally here in the states and NOW I know why. Soccer is not a big deal here because the Network and Cable TV outlets don't push it, and they don't push it because it does not lend itself to the TV format like Baseball and Football and Basketball do. With the 'big three' there are built in places for commercial breaks - time to go take a leak or get a beer or both. In soccer there are none, so the Networks can't load up a game with breaks and as a result they don't push it, so we don't watch. LOL That's my theory anyway.

Ohhhhhh waaaaaay...ohwayohwayohway

And I don't think Zooey likes soccer, which is frankly enough for me.

Flopping sucks. Ronaldo is one of the worlds best players but it's hard to shoot when you're flopping. He does this to shoot the free kick and he's arguably the best at kicking the free kicks. It's rare to see the US dive like that.

There was some flopping in the last NBA Finals game. Flopping sucks. Where's the sportsmanship? Play the freaking game.

If you have trouble getting interested in the World Cup try watching before the match begins when each team's national anthem is played. Especially your country's anthem. That does it for me.

Sure...the World Cup. Heck, I could get up for a turd throwing contest if team USA were involved. I mean long term. Unless and until they figure a way to slam commercials down our throats during a game, IMO, soccer will just never catch on professionally here in the States. Figure a way to get some beer ads and hot chicks in there and I'd be willing the bet Soccer could do well here.

It's hard to love a game that may end in a draw (possibly 0-0). And you're right about needing a break here and there (thank you DVR) and it probably will never catch on here because American football, basketball, baseball and hockey have a winner in the end. Isn't that why we play sports? To find out who wins?
American football, basketball and hockey have more action as well.

That said, every four years soccer becomes more than sport for me and many others. It's national pride. That's why the draw with England was good. A win would be better but a loss would bum me out.

I did watch the whole Portugal match, the free kick that hit the post was nice but his flopping took away from that kick even though that did set up said kick

Worst sport on the planet. They flop and wine worse than NBA players. And I didn't think that was possible.

Soccer invented flopping. I believe that the europeans brought flopping to the NBA (Vlade Divac comes to mind).

Any one see the US get robbed against the Slovenians? I'm still upset about that.

Im trying to get into it, Im pretty much much a Football and Basketball guy. This sport is hard to get into, someone help me understand why they end the games in a tie? Couldnt they penalty kick it like they do in later round games?

Well, you end it in a tie because of how the outcome of games are rewarded. You get 2 points for a win and each team get 1 point for a draw. If you loose you get 0 points.

If you for example have the look at the group play in the World Cup each team will consist of 4 teams playing 3 games each.

Example:

Brazil - Germany * Germany wins
Brazil - Italy * Draw
Brazil - England * Brazil Wins
Germany - England * Germany Wins
Germany - Italy * Draw
Italy - England * Italy Wins

The final standing would be:

Germany 5p
Italy 4p
Brazil 3p
England 0p

Germany and Italy would advance to the next round since they have the most points and therefore you might not need to win a certain game. This adds a strategic wrinkle to the game since it allows team to go out and for example defend a 0-0 result in order to secure 1 point and advance to the next round.

If Germany and Brazil would have played a draw in my example 3 teams would end up with the same points and then you would look at goals scored and such.

Hope this helps.
