Will You Eat a Gar?

(you can pick more than one option.)

Stereotype says cajuns eat anything. But this question is directed at Cajun, Creole, and non-Cajun or Creole posters. I know you well enough
to know you are above eating nutria. Garden District and Uptown, I know you will likely abstain. Non-Gulf Coast posters are going, "What is a gar?" Lafayette people might laugh at me, like I'm some kind of deviant, but every one of you has eaten a gar, whether you admit it or not.

Whether you know this, SE Texas is actually an extension of Cajun Country. Look at your map and focus around I-10. The State Line really shouldnt start until you go past Baytown to Beltway 8. We got Acadians, swamps, gators, we work in the oil, rice, and barge biz's, and yes, we have gars.

I was up Lost River, where the Trinity R. deltas into Galveston Bay. (Looks just like the Atchafalaya or any swamp in LaFourche) Had a great time. Gators everywhere. lost crawfish traps. shot pistol. fished... anyway I caught two gar, and my friend laughed when I wanted to keep one. I've always threw em back, mostly because of the trouble of cleaning them, but just wondered yesterday.

Do you eat gar?
How do you clean it?
Do you look down on people who eat em?
Got a recipe?

Even my low-life red-neck family don't eat no gar. What the hell man?

papz 03-21-2011 06:41 PM

Sure why not... I recall an old friend of mine telling me it's good. Hell... I'd eat Flipper if it was legal. Well, maybe.

Beastmode 03-21-2011 08:29 PM

Yep, patties or gar balls. I've had the gar balls, not too bad. It's just hard to find somebody who knows how to make them edible.

During the depression the feds sent agents to La to see if people were starving. They reported back no and went into detail on the stuff we turned into food. That's what my Dad told me anyway.

foreverfan 03-21-2011 09:51 PM

I'd smoke a gar....

This is one of my all time favorites. It's a rare cigar that you can only get it online. If you like gars, this is the
one of the best most affordable ($4) gar out there from my favorite place to buy stogies.

CAO Black - Cigars International
Only 2000 boxes are produced each year and each box is numbered.
Medium bodies with notes of vanilla, cocco, coffee and cream.

No, I will not eat gar sky
I will not eat it in a car
I will not eat it at the bar
I will not eat it on a plane
I will not eat it with a flame
I will not taste it at the lake
I will not eat it with a cake
I will not eat no gar there Sky
And if you make me I will cry

Srgt. Hulka 03-22-2011 09:38 AM

I’ve eaten oysters, crawfish, alligator, mud cat, channel cat, opelousas cat, shark, goat, wild hog, escargo, clams, squirrel, deer, something down in Argentina, not sure what it was. I’ve even eaten bar-b-que’d black bird and deep fried armadillo. But gar is something I’ve never had. If I catch a gar, I usually kill it and throw it back, or give it to the folks fishing from the bank. But yes, if given the opportunity, I would eat it…if someone else fixed it. I’ve even had the opportunity to eat mountain oysters…but I turned them down. I do have my standards. :)

Would you could you, with cayenne?

aha, so there could be a cultural or class divide working here. Perhaps the dislike of gar is merely suburban & Euro-centric. Somebody from Lafayette please weigh in now.

Totally different dynamic here. I would eat a gar, caught in Buffalo Bayou in Houston. (girl's voice: "Eww!") But I have a strict self prohibition against eating genitalia.

side question to saintfan: how does honeybadger feel about this?

SapperSaint 03-25-2011 09:23 AM

I will take the Sarges outlook.

Things I have ate:
Cow
Deer
Chicken
Turkey
Bass
Bream
Crappie
White Perch
Cartfish
MudCat
Channel Cat
Shark
Wood Duck
Mallard
Squirrel
Rattle Snake
Water Moccasin
Shrimp
CrawDaddies
Gator
Lamb
Sheep
Buffalo
Elk
and I'm not sure but I think I am have eaten a Cat at a oriental joint. I guess if I was hungry enough I would eat a gar. Hell, I would eat a Honey Badger if I was hungy enough, just because at that point I really wouldn't give a @%&*!

papz 03-25-2011 09:30 AM

If Honey Badger can kill Chuck Norris, what makes you think you can eat Honey Badger?

SAINT_MICHAEL 03-25-2011 03:47 PM

I've eaten..

Gator
Bear
Elk
Rattlesnake
Ostrich
Conch
Turtle
Frog
Iguana
Fish Eggs
Goose Liver
Beef tongue
Sheep Brains
Rocky Mt Oysters

So yeah, I'd eat a gar if properly prepared.

funny, you put beef tongue on that list, Michael. Im hispanic, and among my brothas, beef tongue is just as normal as chicken wings. Of course we also eat guts
and cow stomach lining soup, so what do we know?

No doubt about it, cuisine is a regional/cultural taste. When I moved from Baton Rouge to Montana, people there couldn't believe we would really eat crawfish. Of course I couldn't believe they are rocky mt oysters either!

Srgt. Hulka 04-14-2011 05:05 PM

I'm always hungry!!
Havn't eaten a single mudbug yet this year...
But I am going to the Mudbugs game Saturday night.
Does that count?

skymike 04-15-2011 07:11 AM

GEAUX MUDBUGS! Im glad you have something good to occupy yall, Hulka. I think hockey's a great game. dont understand it, but Im amazed at those guys skills.

The Houston Aeros, btw, play game two of their playoff series with Peoria
tonight. The Rivermen are not happy with the Aeros one game lead. I think there might be trouble tonight in the Toyota Center. Game Two...
Faceoff... 7:35! ( I actually did it like that on my 7am sportscast--)

I hear ya Mike. I don't know the rules of hockey either. I don't see a penalty when it happens like I do in football. I just have to take the refs word for it. I love to go to the games though. I actually bought the tickets for my daughter for her 10th birthday. She loves to go more than I do. The hockey game is the only place I allow her to say "You Suck". It's part of a Mudbugs tradition. Yes, this is the same girl that loves the Saints Football, Shreveport Captains Baseball, LSU Football, and Monster Trucks, but also loves shopping, dressing up, and painting fingernails.

For you guys in Houston...
