My First Earthquake

Been in California 2 years...Northern California. Just felt my first earthquake...it was a 3.9 in Berkeley that made the building sway a little here in San Francisco just under Coit Tower where I work at Levis Plaza.

Un effing cool...no, not cool at all. At least you can see a hurricane coming.

M3.9 – San Francisco Bay Area, California

My brother was working in Mexico City in the early 80s when a major earthquake struck that killed a lot of people.

My brother fortunately wasn't injuried.

Actually heard one here in Shreveport back in about 86, one afternoon while I was studying. A low rumble that lasted about 6-7 seconds. I thought an 18 wheeler had hit something out on Youree Drive, near where I lived. Turned out later on the news, it was reported that it was a small earthquake. I cant even imagine what a large one feels like.

Was extremely surreal for me. Of course everybody else was "eh, no big deal...that was a little one". Whatever. Our office is on the 3rd floor, and the building swayed back and forth.

I was never afraid of the weather. You usually have some time to prepare. Earthquakes? You got no place to run, and no place to hide. NO BUENO!

I lived in SoCal twice...back in the mid 80's for a couple of years, and then we returned in '92 and were there until 2002. I experienced 3...Big Bear, Northridge, and the last one was centered near Barstow.

What was weird was that a couple of them hit during the sleeping hours, but for some reason I woke up just before they hit.

The worst was Northridge, which had my bed literally moving back and forth. I remember thinking that if things get worse I'm going to have to jump out of bed and do something. Fortunately, it was around that time that things started to subside.
