Bass fishing tip of the week

This week on Sapper Outdoors; I will be talking about Bass Fishing with softbaits as top water lures.

The first one I will talk about using is a tube. I prefer the YUM Vibra King in White with silver flake. Without a sinker weight.

Now the way I use these is with or without a foam earplug. Yes, thats right an earplug. When using an ear plug; you will need to "roll" the plug until it will fit into the hole of the tube and push it all the way to the nose of the tube. (REMEMBER) you will need to do this quickly because the earplug will expand rapidly. I use a flat #2 pencil to help with this. Once that is done I will take my hook and insert into the middle of the nose and curl it out just under the bottom. Make sure you go through the plug. Then I Texas rig it with the point of the hook clasped just under the skin on the top of the tube. This help prevent snagging when throwing into branches and rough lilly pads.

Once you have made your presentation. Simply twitch your rod side to side. This gives the tube a perfect swimming motion. You can vary the twitch from hard to soft. The bait will over time sink to represent a dying minnow.

This same practice can be done without the earplug. The main difference is that the tube doesn't float as long and give the "popping" sound as a standard topwater bait. This same tactic is effect with "Super Flukes".

Practice makes perfect and once you get the handle of it, bass just can't resist.

Until next week or until you guys get tired of me posting this stuff....

Great thread & thanks for the tip! Use tubes quite often, but using an earplug like that never occurred to me. I'll definitely give that a try as the weather warms up around here.

Something I've tried here on Lac St. Clair is I'll roll my tubes in salt and/or soak them in brine the night before. Seems to encourage strikes.

Both great tips SloMo; on extra salt and brine. I will sometimes put garlic powder on if I'm in a jam and the fish aren't interested in what I'm using.
