Do little girls really need a doll to "breastfeed"?

The child wears a bib with “flower nipples” and the doll baby makes suckling sounds when put to her chest.

A doll that little girls “breastfeed” which is going on sale for Christmas has outraged mums.

The child wears a bib with “flower nipples” and the doll baby makes suckling sounds when put to her chest.

The high-tech £60 Breast Milk Baby – which is expected to be a hit – was yesterday branded “toe-curlingly gross” on parenting forums.

One mum said: “I think a BF doll is just weird and gross.

“It is the same as these bras you get for young girls who just don’t need them.

“Just let kids be kids – there’s plenty of time for them to learn about BF/birds and bees etc.”

Another posted on Mumsnet: “Having seen the scary flower nipple bib thing I think its toe-curlingly gross. I’m pro BF but this is just weird.”

And one mum said: “Why would a little girl need to learn how to breast-feed before she has breasts? Before puberty?

"This is another disgusting example of forcing adulthood on our children long before they’re ready.”

The doll demands to be winded when it has finished feeding and cries if the girl doesn’t do it.

The toy comes in girl and boy versions and various backgrounds, from Afro-American Jessica and Jeremiah to Far Eastern Lilyang and Tony.

In the US, where the doll went on sale yesterday, Fox News presenter Bill O’Reilly told viewers: “I just want the kids to be kids.

"This kind of stuff – we don’t need this.”

Spanish maker Berjuan Toys said its doll was educational.

Spokesman Dennis Lewis added: “We’ve had a lot of support from lots of breast-feeding organisations, lots of mothers, lots of educators.

“There also has been a lot of blowback from people who maybe haven’t really thought why the doll is there and what its purpose is.

"Usually they are people that either have problems with breast-feeding in general, or they see it as something sexual.”

The dolls are on special offer at thebreastmilkbaby.com, priced £30.

The website has these breast-feeding tips for little girls: “Place your baby’s mouth next to the flowers and she’ll start to suckle and swallow.

"Just like a real baby. If your baby is still hungry you can give him the other breast.”
