Zebras and ostriches race at the Fair Grounds


Scores of kids and camera-wielding adults crowded the rails at the Fair Grounds Race Course to see the Zebra Zip and the Struthio Stakes, exotic animal races featuring zebras and ostriches on Saturday night. Zebras with fan-suggested names like Zeebiscuit and Replacement Ref and ostriches with nom de plumes like Feather Duster and Don't Call Me Emu ran the 140-yard race, sometimes after throwing their jockeys.
