Any Preppers out there?

Is anyone getting into the prepper culture? What are you storing, what are you keeping for currency, what are you stocking for ammo?

I've got enough to last me and my family about a year in food and water. We have enough ammo to fight off a small army and working on the house hardening thing now.

Give me your opinion on the good stuff and not so good stuff.

TheOak 03-23-2013 12:24 PM

What are you preparing for?

Re: Any Preppers out there?

Just in case something happens. Could be anything, financial collaspe, Natural disaster, sun flares, martial law. You name it we get closer to something everyday.

TheOak 03-23-2013 12:32 PM

Ok, walk through this with me. I'm not making fun but if you have a solution for all the holes I can poke you'll be better prepared. I'm good at poking holes, sort of what I do for a living.

Do you live very close to a fresh water source? How fresh will that source be post apocalyptica?

Fresh water being more important than canned food in reality.

I have a well over 100 feet deep and it's on solar power and my incoming well water is pumped through filters before it ever hits the inside pipes. but I also have a 6 month supply of drinking water and portable filtering kits just in case.

TheOak 03-23-2013 12:41 PM

Sterilization kits? Is your solar system for your well protected?

Have someone in your house medically trained? A lot of people prepare for attack but not sickness.

How far is your well from your home and can you defend both at the same time.

Sure you have enough ammo to defend against a small army from a head on attack but how would you fare against three guys that take out your water well and sit and wait for you?

TheOak 03-23-2013 12:42 PM

What calibers are your guns?

Re: Any Preppers out there?

I've got a 7.62 rifle,12 gauge 8 round assault shotgun, 22 semi rifle, 380 pistol and 38 special. the solar unit is placed outside my backdoor and is portable. My well is in my front yard right outside the front door about 30 feet. I was in the USMC for several years so the medical training is basic cpr, etc. I've also worked in hospitals for the last 30 years so I've picked up a thing or two and also have a couple of different medical manuals and first aid kits and supplies.

Watch this and tell me you don't think will happen soon?

I'm on this weekend via phone do not going to vids.

Before you start thinking about hardening your home, are you sure that you are going to stay there?

No choice really. I think I'm in a fairly good location 60 miles north of any major city in the mountains and in the country with only 25K people. Elevation is about 1500 feet.

Nothing funnier than preppers here in England.I wonder what they are going to use to keep themselves safe and fight off intruders. In guessing a bow at best probably a bat.Ill be ok,I have a stick with a nail in it so I'm better armed.Im also screwed if there is ever a nuclear war living within 3/4miles from Northwood headquarters.

Northwood Headquarters is a military headquarters facility of the British Armed Forces in Eastbury, Hertfordshire, England, adjacent to the London suburb of Northwood. It is home to three command and control functions of the British armed forces and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO); Permanent Joint Headquarters, Commander in Chief Fleet and the NATO Regional Command, Command Component Maritime.

Here is my advice to preppers, and its not directed at any one person. It is actually the very first thing that comes to mind when I see the TV shows.

You may want to stop telling people you are a prepper, stop telling people what you have, stop telling people where it is.

I watched an episode of Doomsday preppers where some guy stated where he is, all of his stocks, then covered his security for his bunker in detail, down to the perforated handrails so he could torch an intruder...

All I could think was "thanks"..... Ill just seal your air supply and not bother with the front door.

There are two aspects to this, there is the survival (water, food, sustainability), then there is the absurd (moats, flame throwing hand rails, spider holes)....

The best defense is to keep the struggle far away from your home. Not at your front door, it's too easy to burn you out if I want in. Rethink setting up your primary defense at your front door.

Woods are nice and concealing but too easy to burn you out. I would prefer a high perch with only 1 avenue of approach and a clear line of sight down that avenue of at least a mile.

Lanes of fire from an attic window.... Seriously??????

Ill just drop back 300m and wait for you to try and scan the horizon. Trust me, I only have 3 feet to watch and ill see you before you see me.

You have enough supplies to live in a home for a year? Where is a years worth of human excrement going? Foyer?

Re: Any Preppers out there?

I enjoy watching Doomsday Preppers. While I think some of them are bat #$^& crazy, if I had tons of money to blow, I'd do some prepping... just for the hell of it. Who doesn't want a decked out underground bunker... that's cool as hell. It's like making some of your childhood fantasies come true. I'd load up on bazookas and grenades too. http://smileys.emoticonsonly.com/emo..._toss-2430.gif

Seriously though, I don't think it's a bad idea to do minor prepping for the house. A months supply of water, nonperishable items, first aid kid, among other minor things... isn't a terrible idea especially if you have kids.

Basic preparedness is very advisable, at a minimum it will be very handy for hurricanes.

No they make bag buckets for that too just in case the well power fails (solar). I agree oak that you shouldn't tell anyone but I thought you guys would be safe, you're drunk most of the time. roflmao

Re: Any Preppers out there?

Watched an episode of DDP this morning getting dressed for work.. OMG that is some funny stuff.

So this couple that fears the melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet decided to pack up and move to the highest desert elevation in Texas that they could... The Chihuahuan Desert at roughly 5500 ft in altitude so they could escape the flood. Which according to paleoclimate data would take around 13,000 years.

Problem is that there is none of what they are running from where they are now.. Water.. LOL

They are living a camper and building their home out of trash and tires.

I was walking out the door when the snake hunter showed up to teach them how to catch rattlers for food, water (blood), and poison for their spear tips.

its those crazy ones that make the rest of us look crazy. I have a garden and some chickens some extra food stored, guns, ammo but I plan on staying where I am because we're already in the country. My house looks normal no visible preps but when and if the shtf i'm as ready as i can be. if it doesn't then I know I bought insurance I didn't need as always

Here is a story about a person i know personally.

Went to a flea market and bought $500 worth of seeds in PVC tubes..

Decided to build a safe room and line the walls inside with Kevlar.
My Comment: Sounds like a plan... Until I cut through your Kevlar with my Swiss Army knife. :D

He also keeps a stock of silver bullion (not the cubes you make soup with ) he believes that his silver will be the new currency in Thunder Dome..
My Comment: What are ya going to do... Shave off a piece to buy some more Kevlar?
