Hmm ... no wonder I kept hearing those Chicken Shack commercials on the radio yesterday. They worked too because even though I didn't realize it was National Fried Chicken Day, I celebrated with a 12pc/1 side, dark meat special for me & a few guests as we watched the Detroit Tigers win their fifth game in a row on their way to the World Series ... oh yeah, "we're talking baseball ... the Motor City team ... motown, motown ... ":mrgreen:.

Fried chicken is a quintessential American dish, along with hamburgers, hot dogs, apple pie, barbecue, peanut butter, and casseroles. We considered reader feedback while also consulting our staff and several national experts. Along with some necessary Midwest mentions (such as a couple of infamous dueling restaurants in Pittsburg, Kan.), we’ve included a unique venue that feeds its scraps to local raccoons, as well as a North Carolina church kitchen turned popular local restaurant.

Flour, water, salt, chicken, and lard are just the beginning when it comes to fried chicken. These basic ingredients lay the foundation for customization — whether it’s a vinegar-based marinade, cayenne, or even maple-honey butter. The possibilities are (actually) endless. A few days ago, my teacher asked... what our favorite animal was?

I said, "Fried chicken."

She told me, I wasn't funny. My parents told me to always tell the truth and I did. Fried chicken IS my favorite animal. She couldn't have been right, because everyone laughed.

Anyways, my teacher sent me to the principal's office. I told him what happened and he laughed, too. Then, he told me not to do it, again.

Then, I told my dad what happened. He said my teacher was probably a member of PETA and how they love animals very much. Well, I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef.

The next day, in class, my teacher asked what out favorite live animal was?

I told her it was chicken. She asked me why? So, I told her, it's because you could make them into fried chicken.

Again, she sent me to the principal's office. He laughed and told me not to do it, again.

I don't understand any of this. My parents taught me to be honest. But, my teacher doesn't like it when I am.

Today, my teacher asked us to tell her what famous person we admired most?

I told her, "Colonel Sanders!"

Guess where I am now...

Fried Chicken and Collard Greens. Why are some blacks offended by what some consider a racial stereotype? Man if I was on death row that would be on a very short list of last meals for me.

I challenge anyone to name a better tasting meal (health concerns aside).

Top 5...

Steak and Potato, preferably a Ribeye, medium rare.
Fried Chicken and Greens (take your pick).
Pork Chops and Mashed Potatos (or Macaroni & Cheese).
Cheeseburger and fries, preferably crinkle cut.
Fried Shrimp and fries.

And...

Man I may have to expand it to a top 10.

I would have to add pork chops, either fried or smothered, with collared greens, candied yams, and jiffy corn bread, with a big glass of sweet iced tea!!
