At least 21 treated for burns after trying to walk on coals at Tony Robbins event

Fire officials in California say at least 21 people were treated for burns after attendees of an event for motivational speaker Tony Robbins tried to walk on hot coals.
The San Jose Mercury News reports that at least three people went to a hospital and most suffered second- or third-degree burns.
Jonathan Correll, 25, told the paper that he heard "screams of agony."
"It was people seriously hurting, like they were being tortured," he told the paper. "First one person, then a couple minutes later another one, and there was just a line of people walking on that fire. It was just bizarre, man."
Robbins was hosting a 4-day gathering called "Unleash the Power Within" at the San Jose Convention Center. Witnesses say on Thursday, a crowd went to a park where
12 lanes of hot coals were on the grass.
Robbins' website promotes "The Firewalk Experience" in which people walk on super-heated coals.
Fire Capt. Reggie Williams says organizers had an open fire permit and emergency personnel were on standby.
Other attendees reportedly successfully walked over the coals and called the experience life-changing.
"Overcoming something like that, it's a breakthrough," Henry Guasch, 19, told the paper. Guasch said he suffered a minor burn.

... it amazes me what these 'motivational' guys can get their crowds to do ... oh well, could be worse, we could be reading about 913 people dying from drinking kool-aid, eh?.

I've got to say I like Tony Robbins. From the very first infomercial I saw for Unlimited Power way back in the day. I've never purchased his programs but I have read his book. The science he preaches is hardly new, but he comes at it from a different angle.

Don't hate me. I actually considered going to that event. I'm in the process of trying to figure out how to lose 30-50 pounds and motivation is key. I didn't go to that event because at its cheapest the weekend is about 900 bucks - I blew my cash on two Van Halen shows earlier this year. :airguitar:

Still, to those who roll their eyes at Tony Robbins I can only say this: Read his book first. Just give it an honest read. I'm not going to start telling anybody to walk on hot coals. I don't need that kind of verification, but his book is full of good stuff that anyone could benefit from.

@saintfan: sure you need that guy and paying him so much money? No matter what way you choose to loose weight: you have to continue eating better, otherwise you gaun again anyways. I just lost weight with an easy plan: no carbs after 3pm and sports. It gies slow, but it works and i don't miss anything. Can even have a burger if i want to!

I can't believe what these people think when going to these motivation speakers. Sorry, they will never earn a dime from me....

Nah. I'm not in to Tony to lose weight. I like him because for me he is a magnetic personality. Tai Cheng and either P90x2 or Insanity is how I'm going to lose weight. And eating right and at the right time as you suggest. And because Zooey wants me to.

Robbins talks about some very interesting things - things we learned about in Psychology in HS and college, but in a way that matters.

Think of it like this: Math was always challenging to me. I didn't give a damn when the two trains were going to collide. So, I skated by and passed, but I didn't use math the way people should use it to make their lives easier.

Later in life I started a course in Industrial Electronics. There, as you may guess, you use math to (a) make things work and (b) keep from getting killed. It wasn't arbitrary, and so I learned math like I hadn't before.

That's how I see Robbins. The stuff he preaches involves a way to USE all that crap they were telling us about in Psychology. He's making tons of money, but that doesn't invalidate his message. That's just my take.
