Tide star expected to start over Shockley, Hackney

MOBILE - As recently as two or three weeks ago, ESPN's top National Football League draft analyst barely had Alabama quarterback Brodie Croyle on his board.

But after just three days of Senior Bowl Week, Mel Kiper has changed his mind.

I think Croyle is a Tom Brady type QB. He is a good leader. Some people might say that Alabama's offense sputtered last season. But what do you expect playing in a defense minded conference like the SEC. Hell half of the teams in the SEC are NCAA leaders.

Funny, because every time I saw Croyle during the televised practices he looked...inconsistant. I will admit that he played very well this past season though.

Croyle is crap and you can remember I said that. Croyle is the reason why the Bama offense was horrible last year. Check my other post where I put together his career stats at Bama and then tell me he has a chance in hell at even being in the league in 5 years.
It is just crazy to try and compare him to Tom Brady. Brady had a much better college career.

Actually, Croyle is about the only reason Alabama scored any points at all. 59.6% completions, 2,499 yards 15 total tds (1 rushing), and only 4 ints is pretty good for any SEC quarterback.

http://www.sportsline.com/collegefoo.../AL/TOUCHDOWNS

The only guy on the team that came close to Croyle's td output was fb Tim Castille, who had 7 rushing tds on 128 yards.

And as for Tom Brady, here are the stats for his senior year. 61.02% completions, 2,217 yards, 17 total tds (1 rushing), and 6 ints.

I would say that Brady's and Croyle's stats are pretty similar.

Damn J, never knew you had an opinion. Just joking and I think Croyle is a product of his system. I think he would have performed alot better on a team that was pass oriented.

wheelman 01-27-2006 07:18 PM

^Also, he lost his best receiver halfway through the season. I think Croyle will take longer to develope than Leinart and Cutler, but if he is selected by the right team (I suspect Arizona) then he has a good chance to succeed.

jergensl 01-27-2006 07:46 PM

wheelman and gfanatic lsu,
check my other thread where i compare their career stats, then you will see that brady was a FAR superior college qb than croyle. you cannot just look at a single year of any player. akili smith had one great year and look how great he is. croyle has not even had one good year let alone one great year.

to make the argument that the qb scored the most TDs on a team is just silly. the qb should score the most TDs. goodness gracious you guys wear me out with your nonsense.

jergensl 01-27-2006 07:56 PM

ouch chermy...i will give you my opinion on anything all you have to do is ask.

wheelman 01-27-2006 08:07 PM

It wasn't that he scored the most touchdowns. He was the only legitimate scoring threat on the team. The majority of the points scored by the rest of the team were a result of his play, not despite it. Just ask Florida what they think of him.

jergensl 01-28-2006 10:41 AM

wheelman,
read this very carefully...of course a qb is going to be a scoring threat...a good to great qb makes playmakers/scoring threats out of those around him.

croyle has only had 2 real years as a starter and one of those years was absolutly horrible. this season he had a good season at best. if you look at his performance over the entire season he only had 2 really good games. one of those was against florida, but the other was against utah state.

i hope for his own well being he proves me wrong, but i don't think he will be worth anything more than a6th or 7th round pick.

jergensl 01-28-2006 10:52 AM

i don't see anyone comparing leinart to croyle, but this shows the difference between what you get with a #2 overall pick instead of a #34 pick at qb:
Leinart vs Arkansas 70-17 18-24 381yds 75.0% completions and 4TDs 0INTs

Croyle vs Arkansas 24-13 13-27 173yds 48.1% completions 2TDs 0INTs

now one could say that a difference in supporting cast makes up for the difference in the numbers, which might be true, but look at the completion percentage. there is also the possibility that Leinart just makes his teammates look that much better.

papz 01-28-2006 12:23 PM

Croyle is going to be a career backup... I see coaching for him in the distant future. Prove me wrong Brodie...

gandhi1007 01-28-2006 12:33 PM

I can say this. Prothro is one heck of a receiver, but didn't get the stats he could have (not counting this year's injured season), because Croyle just couldn't get the ball to him. He did help Croyle out alot with all those circus catches he made on poorly thrown balls.

Croyle is average backup material at best. :D

First of all, you really need to work on your reading comprehension skills. I didn't say he was just A scoring threat. I said he was their ONLY scoring threat. Granted, Tyrone Prothro was a legitimate scoring threat also, but he missed more than half the season.

You're using that as an argument against him, but when you talked about Tom Brady in your stat thread you failed to see (in your own posts mind you) that the two have similar stats. They both only started for two seasons, and each played badly in his first year as a starter. In fact, you praised Brady for his play.

Quote:

Brady*In his first year Brady completed 214 of 350 passes (61.1%) for 2,636 yards and 15 touchdowns, setting a school record for the most attempts and completions in a season.
That's great. Just wonderfull. Although you failed to mention that he threw 12 interceptions. That's almost a dead even td-int ratio. Croyle's numbers were 16 tds and 13 ints. That is the same ratio.

Now let's compare their senior years. Croyle threw 14 tds and 4 ints. That's about a 3.5 - 1 ratio. Brady threw 20 tds and 6 ints. He actually had a slightly worse ratio.

Then there is Croyle's wild card. Croyle's first year as a starter was the 2003-04 season. He missed most of the following year because of an injury. However, according to your post from the stat thread, he still managed to throw 6 tds and 0 ints in 2004. A 6 - 0 ratio.

Let's go even further than this. Look at Carson Palmer's career stats at USC. In Palmer's freshman year, he threw 7 tds and 6 ints. He missed most of his true sophomore year, throwing 3 tds and 3 ints, and was granted a redshirt. In his redshirt sophomore year, Palmer threw 16 tds and 18 ints. He threw 13 tds and 12 ints his junior year. He finally broke out in his senior year throwing 33 tds and 10 ints.
http://usctrojans.collegesports.com/..._carson00.html

I know Brodie didn't have as many tds, but that's not the point of showing Palmer's stats. I also don't think he is as good as Leinart, Young, or Cutler. The point I have been trying to make this entire time is that you can't judge a college quarterback strictly by his stats, which is exactly what you are doing. For cryin' out loud, even Mel Kiper Jr. (the biggest stat whore in sports media) has him possibly going in the second round.

Now, if you will excuse me, I'm done with this argument. It's gotten annoying. 8)

jergensl 01-28-2006 02:03 PM

wheelman,
if he is their ONLY scoring threat there is something wrong with him. a good-great QB makes those players around him scoring threats.

i NEVER said you can judge a QB only on stats.

when looking at INT ratios you can't just look at TDs...you have to look at how many INTs per attempts. another important thing to look at is their CAREER completion percentage. Brady's was much better than Croyles.

time will show that i am correct and you are a SEC homer.

GoldenTomb 01-29-2006 03:30 AM

LOL I just want to know why there is a 2 page topic on Brodie Croyle. The Saints won't have to think about picking him as he's a 3rd-4th rounder at best.

Also I don't think anyone here is arguing that he's near the caliber of a Leinart, Young, or Cutler. however I think because he played in the SEC, he should be cut a little bit of slack, no?

jrmllb 01-29-2006 04:09 PM

Cryle has the talent to play in the NFL...His downfall will be his body...injury prone

Don't be surprised if the Saints draft a second quarterback late on day two. I've seen teams do it before.

LivnaLieTimay 01-29-2006 04:50 PM

Wheelman, the Saints will not draft 2 qb's in this draft. We have way to many holes to use 2 picks on qb's. The Saints front office isnt the best in the league to say the least, but they aren't dumb enough to take 2 qb's... I hope, lol

wheelman 01-29-2006 05:23 PM

^You should know better than to have such an emotion as hope when thinking of the Saints front office. They feed off of broken dreams. :patos:

hagan714 01-30-2006 05:49 AM

was it Croyle or that big TE and WR he was throwing to? They all adjusted well to his thows
