Steelers trade Holmes to Jets for fifth-round draft pick

The Pittsburgh Steelers traded wide receiver Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets late Sunday night for a fifth-round draft pick in this month's NFL draft.

Holmes, the MVP of Super Bowl XLIII, is facing a four-game suspension for his actions in regards to the league's substance abuse policy, according to a source. The Steelers have grown troubled with some of Holmes' off-field issues and had no intention of giving their star wide receiver an extension.

A woman filed a lawsuit last month claiming Holmes threw a glass at her in an Orlando nightclub, cutting her above the eye. The woman changed her mind, and the case was reopened by the Orlando police. The woman's lawyer told the Associated Press that a witness has stepped forward taking responsibility for the thrown glass. A police investigation is ongoing.

In 2008, Holmes was cited for marijuana possession in Pennsylvania, and the Steelers deactivated him for the game following the incident. In 2006, he was charged and arrested for domestic violence in Ohio, but the charge was eventually dropped.

Holmes' contract expires after the 2010 season, and he is likely to get a new deal from the Jets at some point.

Holmes and his agent, Joel Segal, were not granted permission to talk to other teams, and thus did not begin any talks on an extension with the Steelers, according to league sources. They only found out about the trade late Sunday night.

Some league executives who were reached Sunday night said that despite their concerns with Holmes' behavior, it was surprising the Steelers did not get at least a third-round pick in return, with teams like Washington, Miami, Tampa Bay and Carolina among those in need of a wide receiver.

The Jets have been one of the most active teams in the league this offseason. They traded for CB Antonio Cromartie, and signed RB LaDainian Tomlinson in free agency. They also brought in DE Jason Taylor for a two-day visit last week, but no deal was consummated.

Holmes is a loud quiet production WR, He''s loud from all the stuff he does but quietly produces. I for 1 Live in NY and He might not have to worry about gettin caught with the UooK depending on how well he plays and if he wants to violate an throw another bottle in the club he'll get hit wit 1 back, Jets are lookin like the team we need to wax in FEB. That said My Dad is a Jet Fan I'd Love nothing more then to Bust the Jets Ass in the Super Bowl Next season

Ben has been charged twice in a year with this type of misconduct. No matter how much he pays to silence the victims it is a black eye for the league and the steelers

I cant play the Race card as I am White as wonder bread!!! I am just pointing out an observation. If he had kicked a dog he would be gone already. Innocent until proven guilty is BS and we ALL know it. The justice system is driven by money and some people manage to buy there way out of trouble often. In this time in our country Vicks dogs have a larger voice than Bens victims but hey if those females are willing to take a PAYADAY to let him off its their choice right. Also have you ever heard of the "Rooney Rule" put in place because the Ronneys who own the Steelers were being biased toward White Coaches over minorities. Well the "Rooney Rule" doesn't apply to players so Ben Benefits; Holmes Packs. Holmes threw a glass, Ben stole the A$$ which is worse.

The Steelers were not going to give Holmes a new contract. The Jets got a very good football player for basically nothing. The Steelers can dump Roethlisberger as well without any cap hit next year, just alot of cash now, but I don't expect it to happen. A WR is easier to replace than a franchise QB. It does seem to be hypocritical though. Even if Ben is innocent, at the very least, he has repeatedly used VERY poor judgement. As the face of the franchise, that's just not acceptable. I personally would dump Ben and take McCoy late in the first and draft Shipley in the third. LOL.

the steelers who have had one of the most stable franchises over the last several decades?

why would they interview a coach they dont want? the rooney rule is a joke...it requires you to interview a minority who may not even be qualified for the job......the league is forcefully integrating and that is not the way to go about it

if you want to have minorities in coaching positions, have them learn the job and earn their way....not be force fed to the owners

you know why there are so many white coaches? because the league was prodominantly white and the players got older and became coaches

now the league is prodominantly made up of minorities and the league will soon see a change in the leadership roles as well

it didnt have to be force fed....it was going there anyway

as far as vick goes.....that had little to do with the crime and more to do with peta.....completely different scenario

and whether you believe people are innocent until proven guilty or not, that is the lay of the law and you gotta live by it

The woman in Vegas went to Ben's room because he called down and said his tv wasn't working. She was a 'hostess', not an electrician. Why was she in his room? Was he planning on raping the maintenance guy if he came up to the room?

In GA they are not even furthering the investigation, and Ben did not even give DNA. Enough said.

Ok so the Video evidence against Ben in GA was mysteriously over written and after reporting the ATTACk the night it happened the victim decides to not speak to police. Say what you want Ben is an animal and should be put Down; As for Vick he did break the Law but if Dogs took checks he would have been just as innocent as Ben!!! Hell he fought dogs.. put those mangy animals in the street and they will fight with out provocation they are animals thats what they do. Ben thinks hes above the law Vick openly takes accountability. If I had to choose Id cut Ben and Sign Vick who has shown greater character.

Let me just simplify for the misguided amongst us here today:

Vick certainly did NOT 'man up' and take responsibility. He lied...to his owner, to the commish, and to the public that supported him, right up until he was forced to recognize the feds had him lock, stock, and barrel. THEN and ONLY THEN did he fess up. Only a true joker isn't aware of that.

Next? Vick went to the pen for something, and it wasn't fighting dogs. Anyone that was paying attention is aware of that.

However, since we're on the subject, fighting dogs is effin sick. Dogs wander around my neighborhood and get along. The are PACK animals, which means they run in groups. Breeding a dog with the sole purpose of having it kill something - even another dog - is sick beyond words, and what Vick did to those that didn't kill efficiently is pure evil. That's my opinion. Everyone has one.

the difference is that vick was proven guilty and ben has basically been proven innocent.....twice

there is no reason to assume that ben is guilty of anything other than poor decisions.......ben hasnt been proven guilty of anything and there is no reason to expect anything less than his innocence until something concrete comes forward

I'm certainly no PETA nut-job, but they have a purpose, they just go way over the top with it. And I think people come before animals, but there is a part of me that wants to adopt every stray I see. People abusing people is bad, but I loath the though of somebody abusing an animal. Generally speaking people can defend themselves (or should when they're able), but animals are ultimately at the mercy of people. I like steak. I am conflicted. LOL

Back to topic (kinda):

I grew up with my Mom, Sister, Grand Mother, 2 Great Grand Mothers, and an Aunt. It was me and my Grandpa around all these women. I have solid respect for women (else my momma woulda hit me in the head with a solid object), so I'm not much worried about what this falconhater clown wants to think. Clearly he doesn't take the time to check his facts before he types something amazingly inaccurate. I'm here to police him tho...it's the off season and I'm bored. LOL

Ben has not been proven innocent in either case..CHECK YOUR FACTS!!! The LAs Vegas Case is pending although it is Civil not Legal( Is that the right terminology). The victim in the Georgia case did not recant her allegations but through her lawyer and his advice stated that she did not want to be part of a "Media Circus" and thought her life had been harmed enough she didnt want to endure the personal damage a trial in the media light would bring her. (She may well have been paid to go away we will never know but she didnt go quietly. And some one please explainhow video evidence in police custody get soverwritten!!!! Also Innocent and Not Guilty are two totally seperate situations. Ben is by no means Innocent!!!
