Is T.O. getting blackballed?

Terrell Owens washed up and looking for work - NFL News - FOX Sports on MSN

Despite all of the negative publicity and perhaps much perceived bad locker room influence, is T.O. really that bad of an option for no team to even take a sniff any more? The Saints are blessed with a plethora of quality wr's. But it's not like the rest of teams are loaded, rather the exact opposite. I say he deserves a spot somewhere. He can still play!

Re: Is T.O. getting blackballed?

I wonder ???

Mike Shanahan took time out from the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship on Thursday in Lake Tahoe to discuss Terrell Owens and Albert Haynesworth -- two high-profile names linked to the Washington Redskins. And the coach didn't mince words on each player's situation.

Report: Portis impressing Redskins
Clinton Portis is stepping up to the challenge. Redskins sources told The Washington Post they expect Portis to be the team's starting running back after an attitude change this offseason. More ...

» Report: Landry had toe surgery in June
When asked about the possibility of reuniting Owens with former teammate Donovan McNabb as a Redskin, Shanahan told New York's WFAN-AM (via The Washington Post) that "I made a commitment relative to T.O., that we were not gonna go in that direction."

Shanahan also was asked about Haynesworth, who has lost over 30 pounds as he prepares for the start of training camp -- an interesting development from a player who has been vocal about his unhappiness with the team's switch to a 3-4 defense and has stayed away from offseason activities.

"I talked to Albert about a month after I got the job and sat down with him and I said if he did not want to be part of the Washington Redskins, that I'd let him go," Shanahan told WFAN. "I wouldn't trade him, I'd let him go to another football team. But if he did take the check for $21 million, I expected him to play any position that we thought would be in the best interest of the Washington Redskins, be it nose tackle, defensive end or if we wanted to play him at free safety, but we expected him to come in in great shape and do the things that he's capable of doing.

"And hopefully he does that. He hasn't shown up for minicamp, so guys are gonna be looking at him, to see what type of shape he's in, if he's willing to do the little things the right way. And time will tell. If he is buying in, and he is in great shape, we know what type of talent he is, and we know he can help our football team win."

Shanahan echoed some of those comments during an interview on NFL Network.

Several of Haynesworth's teammates have been outspoken about the lineman's absence from workouts. When Shanahan was asked Thursday if he was concerned about the players' reaction to Haynesworth's return, he said: "You know, I don't even worry about that. I want guys that are gonna come in and work extremely hard, and hopefully Albert does that."

"Does he need to do that with the rest of his teammates? I think he does. I think he's got to come in in great shape. People have to know that he's gonna do what's in the best interests of our organization to help us win. We're gonna play him at a position that we think will help us win, and hopefully he can play at that high level, because he's very talented. And hopefully he makes that commitment when he comes in."

I am sure he is going to land somewhere. I don't really think he is as bad as perceived to be, someone will need help at WR and give him a call.

Its starts with him, and ends with him. TO Look in the mirror tell me what you see.

The San Diego Chargers aren't optimistic about Vincent Jackson's future with them. But that doesn't mean they believe Terrell Owens is the solution to their potential wide receiver problem.

"We're all set right now with our receivers," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith told the San Diego Union-Tribune on Saturday. "I don't want to be involved. A lot of people have us targeted (with T.O.), but they know I wouldn't do it."

Lombardi: T.O. his own worst enemy?
Terrell Owens' struggle to find a team is nobody else's fault but his own, and it's unlikely that a slew of teams are interested in the veteran wide receiver, Michael Lombardi writes. More ...

» Video: Why is T.O. still a free agent?
» Panthers' Beason now would welcome T.O.
» Shanahan: Redskins aren't interested
That's despite the possibility of a prolonged holdout from Jackson, who wants a long-term contract and refused to sign his one-year, $3.268 million tender, which the Chargers lowered to $583,000 after the June 15 deadline. Left tackle Marcus McNeill has taken the same stance, possibly leaving the Chargers without two of their top players entering the season.

"They have rights," Smith said. "Unfortunately, it's not good for us to win a championship without our Pro Bowl left tackle and wide receiver. Not every player can get max contracts. The more star players you have, the more difficult it becomes. But it's very difficult to win championships without your best players. Everyone knows that.

"But championships also are won by remarkable people who persevere. I'm not dreaming."

Smith told the Union-Tribune that he believes Jackson and McNeill won't return until Week 10 -- the deadline for them to receive credit for an accrued season. That would make Jackson, who has posted back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons, an unrestricted free agent after 2010.

However, as NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora recently noted, if Jackson doesn't report to the Chargers by at least the day before their fourth preseason game, the team could place him on a "roster exempt" list for three games. So Jackson might have to sign by Week 7 to avoid the possibility of being denied an accrued season.

Jackson also is suspended for the first three games of the 2010 season for violating the NFL's personal-conduct policy. However, that suspension will be considered served even if Jackson misses those games in a contract holdout.

Smith acknowledged that Jackson wants a deal similar to the five-year, $50 million pact the Miami Dolphins gave Brandon Marshall this offseason after acquiring him from the Denver Broncos. However, the GM insisted he won't budge.

"I don't know if our guys or their agents think A.J. will fold, but my history should tell you something," Smith said. "I won't be telling anything to these two guys; I have nothing to discuss."

Part of that comes from the labor uncertainty facing the NFL. The 2010 season will be uncapped, denying fifth-year pros such as Jackson the opportunity to become unrestricted free agents, which would have happened in a capped year.

"In a normal year, we would be doing contracts," Smith said. "My philosophy has not changed. I want to identify people and keep them. Under normal conditions, maybe we would have signed them. It's a unique year, a difficult year."

It has been a difficult offseason for Owens, who has watched team after team deny interest in him. The mercurial receiver spent the 2009 season with the Buffalo Bills and caught just 55 passes for 829 yards and five touchdowns, some of the lowest numbers of his 14-year NFL career.

Re: Is T.O. getting blackballed?

if the largemouth is getting black balled, he did it to himself. and this should prove wise to other players that think the big wide ego with teeth will get you a job year in and year out, well its look at me now. it will distroy the last few precious years of playing time. the man was good i will give him that. but all them good years in dallas did'nt get him enshrined there, it costed him a ticket to buffalo where he sucked with no q.b. and is waiting now for someone to go down to get up on a team. so my answer to the question is no he's just old and run down. jerry black balled him lol.

apparently, his ability is no longer worth his mouth.

Which is surprising, because I think he's really toned down in recent history, or maybe I've missed something. He doesnt bother me anymore.
But his past has caught up--- it was completely wrong the way he treated McNabb. It was funny when he called Jeff Garcia ghey.

yes skymike he may have zipped it more with age but the reason i read there not bringing him back is because of his disruptive whining and he did so with some success as the bills went away from there running game during the season to try and please t.o. he was slower off the ball, was harder for him to get out of breaks which caused the play to be unsuccessful, he would try and change the route to accomodate his tardiness to the ball, then miss or drop the ball. he can still play i'm sure but in a lessor role which i think he can't swollow so he's probably done.

I think you hit it pretty square right there. He can still play. He'd be hell as a two or even a three if his ego would allow it. I'm not so sure he's done though. I kinda feel like we'll see him pop up on somebody's roster, which, as long as it isn't ours, I'll be fine with. I get a kick out of drama he brings to the league. LOL

Re: Is T.O. getting blackballed?

one thing u can't overlook is the guy still has talent. He was in a bad system last season with a DII QB and still put up respectable numbers. He stays in great shape and I think he can be a 1,000 yd receiver in the right system with a good QB. The guy just wants to win. When he's winning, he's not a problem. It's the fact he's so outspoken when the team isn't doing well (until last year). So hopefully some team takes a chance on him.

i agree saintfan, he will be on someones roster this season when they come a calling. but i don't see him higher then a low end#2 high #3 reciever this year. remember hes been without a playbook this offseason, camps open up by all next week and hes still homeless. lol. and i know the man still can play if t.o. wants to.
