Dungy-Titans had a bounty on Mannning

Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams had a bounty on Colts quarterback Peyton Manning in Super Bowl XLIV. But while it didn’t result in an injury to Manning, his former coach in Indianapolis believes it wasn’t the first time that knocking Peyton out of a game would have gotten a player paid.

Tony Dungy of NBC’s Football Night in America tells PFT that he believes the Titans had put a bounty on Manning.

Why didn't Dungy say anything to the league then?

“I know they had them in Tennessee,” Dungy said.

This goes way beyond the Saints and far out into the NFL. In other threads, I've pointed out the connections between Greg Williams and all these alleged 'bounty' incidents. This brings up another 'coincidence' ...

- Tony Dungy acknowledges the Tennessee Titans had a 'bounty' on Peyton Manning. Dungy become HC of the Colts in 2002.

- Who was the defensive coordinator of the Titans during much of the Dungy/Colts era? Jim Schwartz, who had been given the job after working as a defensive assistant under, you guessed it, Greg Williams.

Another Greg Williams connection. He knew he was about to be indicted for something, so he sings like a canary.

Fast forward to the 2011/2012 season. Jim Schwartz is now HC of the Detroit Lions, a team considered by many to be undisciplined and heavily penalized. Could this partially be due to the fact Jim Schwartz began developing his professional coaching philosophy while under the tutelage of Greg Williams?

I think so, and I also think it suggests this may be a league-wide problem and not just something unique to the New Orleans Saints.

Oh yeah, this runs a hell of a lot deeper then just the Saints.

My guess is this has been going on since players wore leather helmets.

You always try to take out the teams best player. From the dawn of time. This is not new.

Problem is they are going to penalize the "players named" and that will fall alot on us.

So true So true. ESPN's NFC South blogger has been calling for "heavy penalties" against the Saints. He's calling for Payton and Loomis suspensions if not fired, fines of a large nature, loss of draft choices, all kinds of penalties. This will prove to be more widespread than people think. I also believe that if the commish trys to bang the Saints heavily it will backfire on him because facts will show more teams than not have had some type of incentive plan and he won't be able to punish everybody and it will appear that he was "picking on" the Saints. This whole thing will give the NFL a black eye if not handled properly.

back in the old days i were offered 5 bucks to send a pitch back to the pitchers mound but only if the ball hit him would i see green. its been around forever and i think it will only be hand slaps till its proven in a courtroom that its a bad enough injury in what was caused by a bounty.
