Alex Smith: Cam Newton's stats overblown

"This is the honest truth: I could absolutely care less on yards per game," Smith said. "I think that's a totally overblown stat. Because if you're losing games in the second half, guess what? You're like the Carolina Panthers and you're going no-huddle the entire second half and, yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games, that's great. You're not winning, though."

Actually, he's totally wrong.

Cam Newton broke 300 yards in only 3 games. He managed to get to 4,000 total yards because of those 2 first games, when he threw for 850+ yards. He actually had more games of less than 200 yards total (4).

And actually, the Panthers lost a lot of leads last year in the 3rd and 4th quarter.

And you get hung up on one part of what he said. "This is the honest truth: I could absolutely care less on yards per game," Smith said. "I think that's a totally overblown stat."

Just look at Brees last year, passed for a ton of yards still got beat by the 49ers.

Newton is overrated, just like Matty "Ice", he's just 'newer' and more well-liked then Ryan at the moment.

Actually, I am getting "hung up" in 2/3rds to 3/4th's of what he said, and that part, is totally wrong.

As for Brees and the Saints losing to the whiners, lest we forget, he did get the Saints back from a 17-0 deficit and put the Saints ahead with a minute and a half to go in the game against an outstanding defense. If he weren't actually able to throw for a ton of yards, the game's over in the 1st. And if it weren't for 4 consecutive horrible series by the Saints defense in the 4th quarter of a playoff game, Smith would be unemployed today, and no one would care what he had to say.

He is a Panther, so any kind of positive production is great. This year he will be replaced by RG3, in the Hype category that is.

Smith: 16 G, 90.7 QBRat, 273/445 - 61.3% Comp, 3144 Yd, 17 TD, 5 Int

Newton: 16 G, 84.5 QBRat, 310/517 - 60.0% Comp, 4051 Yd, 21 TD, 17 Int

Neither of you "shook up the world," you're both pedestrian ...

... but, Smith had a vastly better defense, and Newton was a rookie. I'm no Newton fan, but he's the #1 pick who'll be remembered of these two.
