San Diego Chargers apologize for targeting Chiefs fans

San Diego Chargers apologize for targeting Chiefs fans

Behold the power of the internet.

Last week, a Kansas City Chiefs fan running a blog out of Brooklyn, N.Y., was sent a generic email from the San Diego Chargers trying to sell tickets to a Chargers-Chiefs game in San Diego. The fan posted it on his Arrowhead Addicts website as a way to poke fun at the Chargers' desperation, and it worked.

"I totally understand that reaction,” Chargers CEO A.G. Spanos told U-T San Diego. “It’s disappointing because we’ve been so aggressive this year with trying to sell to new Chargers fans. ... We’re trying our best to pack the stadium with Chargers fans. This article, it hurt."

The article hit such a nerve because the Chargers are clearly struggling to sell tickets. They've had six blackouts in the last two seasons and they have to sell Norv Turner to an impatient fan base again.

My only thinking is that if you as a "fan" think that is pathetic then get your sorry behind to the stadium and support your team. I mean I live on a different continent and still try to make atleast one game per year (althou this year looks bleak :-( ), its not that hard to do.

Best weather on earth and they can't sell tickets ... meanwhile, people in Green Bay place their children on the season ticket waiting list.

You stay classy, San Diego!

That may be the problem right there. You want to be at the beach, or packed up in a stadium?

Something similar, I bought tickets aimed for the Saintsfans for the game against the Dolphins 2009 and I still get mails every year with offers to by group tickets for the Dolphins home games.

Yeah but that's different, you BOUGHT tickets to the Dolphins stadium in the past, which is how they got your email, that's understandable. This was just some Chargers ticket rep sending emails willy nilly to Chiefs fans, trying desperately to get people to buy tickets. That's sad.

Maybe if they didn't let their really good players go to New Orleans they would be competitive.:p

So Spanos had to apologize to 20 people... big whoop.

The way I see it, the worst offense here and most embarrassing is how the Chargers CEO threw the sales rep under the bus for doing his freaking job:
Quote:

"This was an overeager sales rep, I would say, who was selling groups," Spanos said. "He acted on his own without checking with his manager. We have sold to visiting fan groups in the past. We don't proactively solicit them for new business. That's not a standard practice of the Chargers. ... I was disappointed the story made headlines. It paints the organization in a poor light, and that's not how we operate."
