Brees, Rodgers, Brady, Manning, Manning, Roethlesburger, Flacco, Rivers, Schaub, Cutler...Off the top of my head, all better than Shatty Ice. So yeah, I can deny he's a top ten QB.

Baby steps pal. Win a playoff game, then come back w/ your "supposed" top ten QB.

Sure you can. There's already been several lists with peoples opinions of top 10 quarterbacks. All good lists. So you can see how some would consider him outside the top 10. You might not agree but that's up to the person making the list.

Just going by passer rating alone, he's at the ragged edge of top 10.

Ryan rates 12th in completion percentage (possibly the most important stat for a quarterback)
He rates 15th in yards/att (another very important stat)

Not captured in the passer ratings is how he does at the end of halves and 4th quarters when the game is close. Ryan's numbers, completion % specifically and his passer rating in general fall off considerably. Definitely not something you'd expect to see in a top 10 quarterback.

And of course there's the reason he's called "Noodle Arm". Look at his completion percentage of passes over 20 yards. It's terrible. Julio Jones and Harry Douglas COULD be serious deep threats for the dirty birds, but as long as Ryan is throwing the ball, we'll never really know.

You can look at stats anyway you want to pick out what's most important to you but, in my opinion, it's a hard sell to say he's top 10.

Well, good for you! You dug up a stat!
Then again, there is the "other" stat, the passer rating stat, on the same ESPN website, that has no Matt Ryan anywhere between 1 and 5.

2011 NFL Statistics - National Football League - ESPN
NFL Total Quarterback Rating - National Football League - ESPN

I guess you can pick and choose which stat you want to use, which stat is more valid than the other, which stat makes you feel better, etc etc etc.

The one thing I know is that, in crunch time, neither Brees, nor Brady, nor the Mannings, etc. look at best overwhelmed, at worst scared, like Matty Melt does. And there's no stat for that.

Matt Ryan isn't even the centerpiece of his own offense, for Pete's sake.

Matt Ryan is a solid QB, who has had success in the regular season. Be glad you have one of those... don't believe what Prisco and ESPN tell you.

'Cause the simple man pays the thrills, the bills and the pills that kill

What makes you think he isn't the centerpiece of our offense? If he isn't who is?

Well, of course, every QB has their negatives. (BTW, he finished 11th in completion percentage).

Your team mainly the offensive line is built to run behind. Your centerpiece is Michael Turner, you've had success when Turner gets his 100 yards. That's why you went 13-3, 2 years ago... You draft Julio Jones and try to turn into a passing team and look what happened

Welcome atitilldie!

I once felt Matt Ryan has been misused by atl's offense. I also realize he is very young and the fact that he's starting in the NFL is impressive.

My biggest gripe with Matt Ryan is a negative others have mentioned - he has a weak arm for the NFL. I'm not talking about completions or how far his completions go down field, I've watched him and I think his arm is underpowered. I feel this limits Matt Ryan and the o-coordinator will probably not make him better.

Matt Ryan is lankey and appears physically weak. Many QB's mentioned, even Flacco, appear physically stronger than Matt Ryan.

I see a Falcon's offense full of ball control where he racks up numbers and completions. That does not establish him in the top 10 QB's.

I thought that was the point of this conversation, comparing those positives and negatives and ranking the quarterbacks based on the results. If we start him off at 8th, based solely on passer rating and then you;

factor in he does not step up in pressure situations, as shown by his numbers in the 4th quarter in close games, his numbers in the final two minutes of halves and fair to poor performances in the playoffs.

and

Add to that his weak arm and horrible completion percentages in passing over 20 yards. (you have to have seen how he lofts the ball when he throws deep)

it becomes very hard to give him the nod over other quarterbacks that have very strong attributes that don't get measured in the passer rating, like Roethlisberger's ability to extend a play and difficulty to bring down or Vick's ability to improvise and make big plays on the ground.

(And he finished 12th in completion percentage. Check the ESPN page
2011 NFL Player Passing Stats - National Football League - ESPN
Then NFL ranking is wrong. Alex Smith finished ahead of him by 4 tenths of a percentage point. The NFL doesn't have a good reputation for getting their facts straight.)

You might use other ways to determine what's important in a quarterback or you may just like view him threw red and black glasses, but..

Can you see how it's easy to say he's NOT in the top ten?
