Re: Replacement refs raising concerns

the nfl has now made a second offer which the referees have walked away from. *it seems that they are holding tight to a 20% increase. *seriously, is there anyone who doesnt think these guys make enough money for what they do? *given time the replacement refs will be just as inefficient as the regular refs have been in the past. *right now people are really into nit-picking the mistakes made by replacement refs. *should we get some kind of reminder of the mistakes that have been made by our regular beloved refs?
*I guess we should should start with the blown coin toss thanksgiving day 1998. *over time coin toss toss, bettis calls tails the ref says "heads it is" flips the coin and it comes up tails. *detroit picks to receive, kicks a filed goal and wins. *nice call!
*That one doesnt warm the cochels of your soul? *How about the "lateral" known as the music city miracle? *AFC playoffs 2000. *The Bills are up 16-15 and kickoff to the Titans, with only 16 seconds remaining. *The kickoff is taken by wycheck who clearly throws a forward pass to kevin dyson,(ruled as a legal lateral pass) who in turn streaks down the side line 75 yards for a touchdown. *Giving the titans the lead which holds the remaining 8 seconds for the win.
* three words: *the tuck rule
Need I say more?
I could go on and on, but i wont. *I thought just a taste of some of the great calls made the refs that so many of you are fighting for and so anxious to see back on the field, might help shake this "grass is greener" syndrome so many people seem to be suffering from.
The old guys suck and the new guys suck. *Thats the nature of a ref, whoever they are, they suck. *There are bad calls and missed calls in every game and these guys will carry on that tradition. *Sure they will make some rookie mistakes, its called growing pains. *But dont kid yourself for one moment that having the old refs back will mean fewer mistakes or even fewer game changing mistakes. *If they were to come back for week 1 by week 3 everyone would be hollering for the replacements.
I just read that in addition to a pay increase the refs also want a retirement plan. Are you effing kidding me? a retirement plan? these guys work 80 hours a year working this part time job and they want retirement benefits. Im not sure if i find this funny or completely insulting.

You do need to say more, because you said nothing at all, really.
First, you bring up an error that happened almost 14 years ago that really has nothing to do with how the game is called.
Then you bring up a play that has been proven it was a lateral pass, even if Titans fans keep saying it wasn't.
Then you bring the tuck rule, which according the NFL rule book, was the right call. May be a BS rule, but is there.

On the other hand, this past pre-season, we have seen a clear lack of knowledge of the rules by the referees, and indecisiveness to make calls on the spot, such as:
Calling a touchback on a ball downed at the 4 yard line.
Spotting a ball on the 1 yard line after a player whose entire lower body was laying on and beyond the goal line downed the ball, because the ball never crossed the plane.
18 yard personal foul penalties.
5 yard holding calls.
Use the wrong signals.
Lose track of downs.
Numerous occasions where whistles were blown to end the play after the player with the ball goes down untouched.
Assess a personal foul after a CB speared a defenseless receiver, who dropped the ball right after so he never had possession, then call that a fumble, and give possession to the other team.

Need I say more? Well, yes, I do. Lay off the asterisks.

i didnt put the asterisks in there i dont know what happened with that. but who the hell are you to tell me how to write?
does it matter how long ago the coin toss was called wrong? people are talking about mistakes. just making a point that even the regular refs make them.
how can one prove a ball thrown from behind a yard marker and caught in front of the yard marker is a lateral? by glossing it over with bullsh*t in the hopes some sucker like yourself will believe it.
the regular refs never call a play down to soon do they? youve never seen a fumble and the refs blow it dead? come on man get real. youre either a sheep who believes the media blindly or employed by the referees union. but either way, if you think the regular refs do a great job, well then im surprised you were actually even smart enough to be able to read my post.

Geez..
Ok.
First, if you didn't put those asterisks there, you may have not noticed it, but there is an [edit] button at the bottom of your post. You can edit what you didn't intend to post.

As for the coin toss: if you wanted to bring up a bad call from 1998, I'd have gone with the Jets-Seahawks game and the TD given to the Jets on a 4th and goal just about at the end of the game, which the replay clearly showed Vinny Testaverde was short on his QB sneak attempt, but there was no Instant Replay in the NFL on that season, so there was no way to overturn the call. ( I believe that play was the catalyst for the NFL re-instituting Instant Replay in 1999, but I digress). The coin toss? Referees are not paid to listen to the game, they are paid to watch it. Could it be that the ref heard wrong? Could it be he didn't quite understand what Bettis said? Could it be someone shouted behind the ref and the ref thought it was Bettis speaking? I don't know.

Now, the Music City Miracle, it has been proven that the ball actually took a backwards trajectory. Here's the video:
Look at the shot at 1:15 mark, and tell me that ball took a forward trajectory.

And I have seen the refs blow the whistle too early many times. Sure. But then I normally have to look at the slow motion replay to ascertain that, because that usually happens when a RB has 3-4 defenders draped on him and they all are going to the ground; and surely I have never seen an NFL referee blow the whistle and call a player down when clearly it can be seen with the naked eye that the player slipped and fell untouched, as in no one closer than 2 yards from him.

Eitherway, ready for a decision to be made... If it was regular season the Refs would be on the bottom line of every Sportcenter.

Can't say I am overly concerned about the replacement refs, the real refs sucked hard last year too. We had multiple threads last year addressing them and there "expertise". The replacement refs have shown improvement as each week passes.

Re: Replacement refs raising concerns

The replacement refs are terrible and this needs to be laid squarely at the feet of Roger Goodell where it belongs. The guy is incompetent at negotiations. Saints fans and all football fans need to realize that this is far more likely to get Goodell fired and get Payton and Vilma back, than any results that might play out in court. He's taken the greatest league in sports and is running it into the ditch, with one bad decision after another.

The first couple of years of Goodell, he was basically operating off the policies of his predecessor, Tagliabue. He had Spygate and seemed to be handling it pretty well. But you can only ride the coat tails of your predecessor for so long. As his influence has grown, as the decisions have become more HIM, Goodell has bungled negotiations, "fixed" things that don't need fixing, dispensed discipline in an arbitrary willy-nilly fashion, he has lied and stretched the truth, he has screwed with the product more and more, to the point where we now have refs who literally flunked out of the "Lingerie Football League" making game-changing decisions by not knowing the rules they are there to enforce. Goodell has got to go.

It was an improvement over the preseason games, that's for sure
