PFT: Panthers fire general manager Marty Hurney

After a 1-5 start dampened the enthusiasm brought about by the drafting of Cam Newton and a four-win bounce last season, the Panthers fired general manager Marty Hurney.

Panthers owner Jerry Richardson announced the move in a statement Monday morning.

“This was an extremely difficult decision,” Richardson said. “Marty made every effort to bring success to the Panthers and took the team to a Super Bowl and two NFC championship games. Unfortunately, we have not enjoyed the success we hoped for in recent years.

“I have the greatest respect and admiration for Marty and will always appreciate the way he tirelessly served the organization.”

Hurney took over as Panthers general manager in 2002, and helped build the Panthers into a team that made a Super Bowl and two NFC Championship Games in the next four seasons, and won a division title in 2008.

But things bottomed out after that, as the relationship with coach John Fox went south, leading to a 2-14 record in 2010.

“I am very fortunate to have been a part of one of the best organizations in the NFL since 1998,” Hurney said in the statement. “As General Manager I will always regret not helping us win the Super Bowl or having back-to-back winning seasons. I hope this change starts accomplishing the direction to those goals.

“I understand this decision by Mr. Richardson and will always have an extremely close relationship with him. I consider him the best owner in the NFL. I am responsible for everybody in coaching, the players, the scouts and everybody in football operations. After six weeks, we are 1-5 coming off a 6-10 season.”

We’ll have more on this as the day progresses.

I wonder if Ryan Khalil is regretting the ad he put in the newspapers saying that the Panthers were going to win the Super Bowl this year?

Yeah. They had to sacrifice somebody.

Did he say the kittens were going to win the Super Bowl? I thought the ad said they were going to the Super Bowl?

It may have been just going to the Super Bowl. Either way, he's probably catching a lot of hell from the fans for being an idiot.

Just looked it up. He gave reasons why they would win. Here's the link: View Ryan Kalil's full-page 'Super Bowl' ad | CharlotteObserver.com

Guess this one is a start for the Panthers. Along with the Saints, has to be one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL. I fully expected the Panthers to compete for a playoff spot this year. If they don't turn it around, my guess is Ron Rivera will be chopped after the end of this season.

If you mean Cam then I have to disagree, LOL. I hope they keep beating their head against the brick wall with Cam for another 4-5 years, at least. I hope he gets his coach fired like Vick did in Atlanta, I hope his play is just mediocre enough to keep the Carolina fans bickering over whether he's the answer or not, I hope they dumb down the offense for him so badly that it becomes ridiculously easy for opponents to figure him out, and I hope he destroys Carolina locker rooms year after year and keeps that team in confusion, disarray and disunity for a long LONG time to come.

They got lucky 1 time this year by beating us when we were without our head coach and without us having a defense, but other than that with Payton as coach we pretty much have owned Cam Newton ever since he got there, and I want him to stay right where he is.

Ouch!

His overall record is not bad.

Cam is not sucking. His stats are nearly identical to his last year start. The Panthers must get better players around Cam. Him and Steve Smith can't do it alone.
