Legendary Raiders punter Ray Guy frustrated but resigned that he's not in Hall of Fame - Yahoo! Sports

Re: Ray Guy

It is a shame he still hasn't gotten in.

You know, if it's a case of "He's a punter", then why in the hell does football teams need one?

PUT HIM IN THE HoF!!!!!

Re: Ray Guy

You make a good point Sapper, why have one. Put him in the HALL is right

Re: Ray Guy

I used to have an inside track at USM. I won't go into it all, but I have helped do a lot of stuff in the football building.

Ray would talk about Al Davis wanting him to punt the ball out of the endzone and Ray would say, "Why. I can put it on their 2 yrd line?"

The guy (no pun intended) was and still is, the best punter of all time.

Re: Ray Guy

If Jan Stenarud is in the HOF as a kicker, there's no reason Ray Guy shouldn't be in the HOF as a 'punter' (I think that was mentioned in the article) ... and I don't even want to belittle Ray Guy's contribution to the game by making that comparison.

The 'guy' legitimized punting as a weapon, he changed the game. Hang-time, pinning your opponent down deep inside their own zone, pinning the return-man against the sideline to virtually eliminate a return ... how can you not select Ray Guy for the HOF?

I played a lot of sandlot ball as a kid, Ray Guy made you want to kick the ball ... you know, so you could yell out, "Ray Guy!" as you punted the ball downfield and imagined you just let loose one of those booming punts Ray did that hamstrung his opponents ... and just before your buddies ran it all the way back to remind you that you were no 'Ray Guy',.

He hit the hanging overhead TV screens in the Superdome that were hanging from the roof over the middle of the field in the 1970s. Not sure if people here knew that bit of Ray Guy trivia or not; they were lower back then than they are now, but still, dayum. It really blew people's minds.

I vaguely remember him when I was a kid but I want to say he was also used as a backup QB. ????

You're probably thinking about George Blanda, same team (Raiders), but Blanda was a kicker, not a punter.

He is who other punters are measures by. Morestead could be the next "Ray Guy".

Re: Ray Guy

Yeah he's just a punter, but the HOFshould at least recognize him as the best ever.

If they're gonna put other non-players (announcers, GM's etc) in the HOF, the best punter ever should at least get in. Give him a little plaque or something.

Maybe they could dedicate a shelf or a plague or a poster or something to the greatest punters ever.
