Tennessee Titans hire Gregg Williams – Fool’s gold or coaching steal?

Williams gets his job back, but the Saints don't get their draft pick back!

*********************************************************

In a sign of desperation the Tennessee Titans have hired suspended New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams as the defensive coordinator/associate head coach post in the Music City. Last year, many presumed that the disgraced culprit of the Saints’ Bounty Gate scandal would have coached his last game in the NFL.

But to the surprise of many, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell lifted the coaching ban which granted Williams the opportunity to interview for NFL job vacancies. For nearly two decades Williams has roamed an NFL sideline as the technician behind elite defenses with the Titans, the Washington Redskins, the Buffalo Bills and the Saints. Despite Williams being the architect behind these stout defenses, his schematics and in-game adjustments required the total trust of his defensive players in his game planning.

In the NFL, trust is the most valuable asset a coach has and once it is violated, talent, football IQ and schematics are viewed to be meaningless. Williams tarnished his record and forfeited the trust he had built once he served as informant to the Goodell. After he uttered the names of the Saints’ defensive players who were involved in the bounty gate scandal in my opinion all of his credibility went out the window.

The Titans may have made a grave mistake in welcoming Williams back to the Music City. But, since players are often given second and thirds chances after multiple NFL rules violations, maybe Williams has learned from his career altering mistake that banned him from the only game he knew. Although sequels are rarely as good as the original, for the sake of the Titans and Head Coach Mike Munchak era the fans are hopeful that Williams second stint as the defensive coordinator will lead to the rise of a dominant NFL defense.

The Titans have the talent and the pieces to assemble an elite defense led by Akeem Ayers, Zach Brown and Michael Griffin, but have they found the right architect? How the players respond to the Williams hire will be an intriguing drama to watch unfold next season
