This would be a waste!

*********************************************************

Several reports have been published about the New England Patriots not retaining the services of veteran wide receiver Wes Welker. Could the Bucs make a run at him in free agency?
According to a source with knowledge of the Bucs potential plans, they will. He stated the team is “eyeing him (Welker) hard” after mentioning what the Bucs are looking to do during free agency and the draft.

The Buccaneers are in need of a legitimate threat in a slot receiver. Third year receiver Arrelious Benn was unable play that role due to injury but there were also concerns his limitations came from the inability to pick up the offense. Tiquan Underwood had the role for the majority of 2012 but he does not draw attention from the opposition like the team is looking for.

But what about the cornerback position? “They (the Buccaneers) are not looking for a corner in the draft,” the source added regarding the team’s day one draft focus. “They feel there is a lot of free agents available and if they can score Wes, they will focus on tight end in the draft.”

The plan sounds puzzling. Stanford’s Zach Ertz and Notre Dame’s Tyler Eifert are perhaps the only two that may go in the first round but picking either of them at 13 could be a reach. Of course there is that possibility of the Bucs trading down.

The free agent market has a good amount of cornerbacks available. Any “top tier” corner hitting the market can come in and start for the Buccaneers right away but at what cost?

It sounds like the team has a definite plan on how they will approach this offseason. Welker, 31, caught 118 passes for 1,354 yards and six touchdowns in 2012 however, may demand a lot of money. With other positions needing to be addressed, targeting Welker should not be Tampa Bay’s main focus.

The free agency period begins March 12th at 4 p.m. ET.

Wes still has quickness but over the past couple of years he has started dropping more and more passes, including crucial super bowl ones

Moving to Tampa and having Josh "crybaby" Freeman throw to him will do a lot for his bank account but not much for his career
