Chase Daniel to Chiefs

1 Attachment(s)
teams interested in him by rumor or report

"CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Chiefs are "very interested" in free agent Chase Daniel.
Per La Canfora, Daniel's market has been surprisingly "very hot" and he could command a long-term backup deal worth "in excess" of $3 million per season. Daniel, 26, would be a respectable clipboard holder for Alex Smith in Kansas City."

Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are also very interested in the fourth-year quarterback as a backup to Josh Freeman.
I have no idea why he would want to go backup Freeman.... they must want to offer him a lot more just to be a backup.

Then again, we don't exactly have money to pay backups this season. Hope it falls through and he stays.

Hate to say it but I would totally pull the trigger on that in Kansas City, if I was the coach there. In a lot of ways he and Alex Smith have similar "good but not GREAT" skill sets, it's a style based on kind of average QB play, and they both can tuck and run with the ball to move the chains, which can sometimes give a defense fits. Smith is definitely better, but I'm really not even sure Smith is all THAT much better than Chase, they're both pretty mediocre actually. They have oodles of cap space over there in KC, too.

Couldn't agree more. Noticing a lot of Atlanta and now Tampa Bay intra-division probes on players. Hope we're returning the favor.

I never understood this. I'm sure there's nothing he could tell them that they don't already know by watching 11 zillion hours of film on us and playing us twice a year..

Our division rivals are more active in FA than us. How much money does Atl have under the cap exactly?

Alex Smith has two things over Chase Daniel:

1. Starting experience

2. Size/height

They were at around $17 million prior to the Gonzo deal. That should be about $10 million under with Baker and Grimes still needing signed.

Because he could beat out Freeman for the starting job!

Bills have cut Fitzpatrick
Might be a opening there

I don't know what to make of any of it. One thread screams "Over the CAP by $$$$$$$$$$$" and the very next one " Saints target Free Agents" I'll wait and see.

Chiefs reached agreement in principle on three-year deal with former Saints QB Chase Daniel, who played at Missouri.

Well, he has a much better chance of winning the starting job there.

Good for Chase. Good dude.

Well this should create a bit of interest this offseason to see who our new backup QB will be. Will it a be a rookie or a reclamation project of some sort?

Re: Chase Daniel to Chiefs

I'm wondering what Cassel is looking for. I'd take him as Drew's backup for a year while we draft a quarterback in the later rounds to develop.

Other names to consider: Drew Stanton, Tavaris Jackson, Derek Anderson, Tyler Thigpen, Sage Rosenfels

I'm a Tyler Wilson fan and if he's there with a mid round pick by any chance(highly doubt it), I'd be interested. Landry Jones, Zac Dysert, and Sean Renfree would make some solid late round options.

Vrillon82 03-12-2013 08:14 PM

Re: Chase Daniel to Chiefs

how old is Thigpen?

He kind of intrigued me 2-3 years back when he was in KC.

Still only 28.

yeah.... guess his days are really numbered in KC... might be too many $.

Jarrett Lee maybe? lol

Fitzpatrick got released as well... he's a Harvard grad.

I get what you mean, but I think the benefit of signing somebody important from a nemesis divisional team is that (back up to a hypothetical Chase in Tampa Bay for a second), the guy from the former team, can help to give you those tendencies and information, without you having to watch the 11 zillion hours of film. Which frees up 11 zillion hours of coaching time for something else, which has gotta help.

Fujita with the Browns, those sacks and interceptions -- no question in my mind something was going on. All the crazy stuff they did with special teams in that game, could easily have come from the Cleveland coaches having more time to look in depth at that stuff, because Fujita was helping the defensive side of the ball, giving the defense pointers and coaching them up. Having "help" on D is one potential explanation for the full-frontal punch in the mouth the Browns gave us.

Also one that I'll never forget, in the 1st Giants game with Shockey as a Saint, in 2009... I forget the exact point in the game, there was a crucial Giants offensive play -- I think the Giants had an important 3rd down to convert, or something like that...there was a timeout, the Saints defense came over to the sidelines, and Shockey was suddenly in the defensive huddle with the guys, talking to the defense. I mean I saw it with my own two eyes, there it was...maybe it was just a pep talk, but here was a situational thing of down and distance, an offense he knew.... Shockey stepped in and talked to the defense, and whatever was said, they definitely stopped the Giants offense on that drive. It doesn't have to be formalized, even just a guy saying to the defense, "look out for the blah blah blah play, they are gonna run left" on the sidelines can really make a difference.

Yep, Scott knew our defensive signals. Why we didn't change those up amazes me.

I was talking about knowing the offensive signals. They stuffed just about everything we threw at them that day. They surely had Bree's number that day. I forget how many sacks it was, but it was tuuuurible.
