Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys strike $108M contract

The Dallas Cowboys are taking care of quarterback Tony Romo.
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Friday that the Cowboys and Romo have agreed to a six-year, $108 million contract extension with $55 million in guarantees, according to a source involved in the process. The deal makes Romo the highest-paid player in franchise history.

WOW. I think Romo is better than Flacco, but still doesn't deserve all of that money. He's been single-handedly throwing away games for YEARS.

Re: Romo for $108 Million!

I have to believe someone in Dallas has gone institutionally insane. There is no way he's worth that. Better off drafting Geno or Glennon and starting completely over. He's taking them nowhere.

Good move Jerry, now you will never see a Superbowl unless you watch it on the tube!! $108 million reasons to lose.

This is actually amazing news. Now it is certain that Matt Ryan will drive the Failcons into complete salary cap hell

He wasn't the only #9 to throw 5 INT's in a game last year.

Re: Romo for $108 Million!

I thought the Ravens overpaid for Flacco, but this is just goofy. If Romo is worth $108M, what does that make a real quarterback worth?

Well wonder if Jerry Jones later will regret the mistake he made if Romo does not win a playoff game again?

Somewhere in that article should be the phrase, " and thus guaranteeing the Cowboys will suck for the next 6 years" ... man, I almost feel sorry for Dallas fans ... almost,.

Tony Romo - The most 4th quarter comeback victories in the NFL over the last 5 years.

Romo is the least of Dallas' problems.

Also, the last 2 years are about 40 million, so basically its a 4 year 68 million contract. Thats not too bad.

Sorry guys... Romo I still believe is a good QB.
He isn't elite by any means but the team (O-line), coaching staff, and owner make him look bad.

Maybe he needs to go to a different team.

As good as Brees was when he was with the Chargers, even he didn't reach his true potential until he signed with the Saints. Of course it helped that he had the perfect coach and the offense was built around him; I doubt Romo will ever walk into that situation.

'Comeback wins' ... it's the same argument Falcon fans use to claim Matty Ryan is "elite". In the great QB debate, it boils down to postseason/superbowls.

In summary: Tony Romo has the most 4th qtr comebacks in the NFL for 5yrs. Despite all that "coming back", Tony Romo has only one career playoff victory and zero Superbowl appearances. Matty Ryan has only one career playoff victory and zero Superbowl appearances, ergo, Tony Romo = Matty Ryan. It has been well established on this board Matty Ryan sucks, ergo, Tony Romo sucks. "Sucks" may be a little harsh, but Romo has shown a propensity for blowing games.

Re: Romo for $108 Million!

Comeback wins just means that you are behind in the first three quarters more often.Give me a QB that can get a team the lead and hold that lead all game, that shows the ability and mentality of not letting off for half a game.
Romo isnt a bad QB,he isnt elite either and shouldnt be paid as such

Thats a myth. His team blows wins. Teams win playoff games, not QB's.

Its a team sport and to judge a QB on playoff wins isn't fair. The problem in Dallas isn't even close to being Tony Romo. If Romo was a Saint under Sean Payton I think he has a Superbowl win and several playoff wins.

I'd take him over Joe Flacco, Ben Roethleisberger and Eli Manning every day of the week.

If we didn't have Brees I'd be elated to have Tony Romo QB'ing for Sean Payton.

The "team sport" argument only goes so far in defense of Romo. I'm willing to give him his props for being an NFL starting quarterback, but that's as far as it goes ... so was Tim Tebow, so was Jon Kitna. I know I've posted this in the Romo threads before, it's a comment I'll never forget from a Dallas fan after one of Romo's infamous chokes, "Football is a team sport and no one player can be held responsible for a loss ... except Tony Romo". The guy has lost games for his team, moreso then any QB in recent memory.

Terry Bradshaw summed it up best, IMO, after/during one of those losses when he pointed out that Romo came up through the practice squad instead of being drafted out of college like most QBs in his position. Bradshaw went on to point out that on the practice squad, they tell you to just dump the ball off when you get pressure and that's why Romo has such problems at critical times in a game, he's been coached that way. It's a very keen observation by someone who would know, IMO.

I wouldn't take him over any of those guys you listed (you gotta' be pulling my leg,) and I seriously doubt playing for Payton would've changed Romo's history much. He has the misfortune of being the QB of the Dallas Cowboys and is subject to comparison with the great QBs that came before him, ie Meredith, Staubach, Aikman ... even Morton & White. If Romo had been a Brown or a Cardinal, he'd be just another blip on the NFL QB radar ...

... and that's all I have to say about that,.

Re: Romo for $108 Million!

Jerry Jones had no choice. Dallas is over the cap in theory, and Romo's contract had a NO FRANCHISE clause for next year. The only way to get Dallas under the cap and keep Romo was to give him what he wanted in an extension.

That is why in the 2013 season we'll have another tier

SUPER ELITE STATUS.... yes in all caps not to be confused with regular elite status.

+1 & agree. People who bash Romo really don't watch the Cows closely... they have so many other problems outside of the QB position it's not even funny. A lot of people forget that he was UNDRAFTED coming out of college. He has come a long way ...

I have to somewhat disagree. When the topic came up several years ago, I began to watch Romo more closely before forming an opinion and the poor throws/decisions he makes at critical times are not the fault of the team or owner. That's not to say that nutcase Jerry Jones isn't driving the franchise into the ground, but Romo has no one but himself to blame.
