D.C. Council may push Washington Redskins into ‘Washington Redtails’

A D.C. Council member is preparing to introduce a resolution calling on the Washington Redskins to change its name, perhaps to the Washington Redtails.

Council member David Grosso, an independent elected last year, said he plans to pursue his non-binding resolution because the current name is “a derogatory, racist name.”

“It’s been a long time that we’ve had this name associated with Washington, and I think its time we take a stand and change it,” Grosso said.

Grosso is circulating his resolution to other council members to try to get co-sponsors. So far, he said, council members Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4) and Kenyan McDuffie (D-Ward 5) have agreed to sign on to it.

In recent months, as the Redskins made their run toward the playoffs, debate about the Redskins name has been heating up. Earlier this year, Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) said he would also like the name changed. But Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and team officials have largely avoided the debate, giving no indications that they are seriously considering such a change.

According to Grosso’s resolution, which he said he plans to formally introduce in a few weeks, the 13-member council would declare that “District residents and their elected representatives should not tolerate commercial or other use of derogatory terminology relating to any people’s racial identity, or which dishonors any person’s race, or which dishonors the name Washington.”

“Washington’s name has been dishonored by association with the word ‘Redskins,’ ” the resolution states. “Because it is well known in America and in nations afar that American Indians have experienced utmost suffering and disrespect over the years.”

Past debates about a Redskins name change have quickly become hung up on what would be an appropriate name for the team.

In his resolution, Grosso urges the team to change its name to the Washington Redtails, noting that that was the nickname used by the Tuskegee Airmen, the pioneering aviation unit that broke the color barrier for U.S. military pilots in World War II. A plane used by the airmen recently was put in a place of honor in the Smithsonian.

Grosso said a change to the Redtails would be a relatively seamless.

“You can still sing the song and everything,” said Grosso, before singing, “Hail . . . to the . . . Redtails.”

Just as importantly, Grosso said, “you can still keep the feather.”

If the name needs to be changed I think thats a pretty good option. Sounds pretty much like the old one, you can keep the colours and pretty much everything else.

It might end with changing all those names. Some teams and tribes however have an agreement n the use of name and imagery, Florida State for example.

Daniel Snyder is the only person who can make the change.

Not gonna happen.

This is actually a giant onion with many layers. "If" you mandate that teams change their names because certain people find them offensive than you also have to go and start changing other names.

Seattle "Bombers" baseball team... See where it is going?

Then you will have the atheists wanting all cities named after Saints changed...

Once the snowball starts rolling... it will never stop because it sets precedent.

I don't see a problem with the "Redskin" name. Its just a football team name, why are some so angry about it?

... that's where I'm at on the issue. You start issuing resolutions making a privately-owned organization change it's name, what else do you start mandating? I thought there was an indigenious tribe or two that was on record being Ok with that team being called "Redskins" anyway ... it's fricken' football, for crissake ... like they don't have anything better to vote on or be concerned with ... DC is a fricken' warzone, SE anyway, maybe dedicate a little time to helping out the local neighborhoods, city council?

By me, the government names buildings & roads after tribes of the Algonquian, ie Chippewa, Ojibwe, Miami, Ottawa, Huron, Wyandot, Sauk and they teach Native American history in the schools ... don't see the big deal with an NFL team.

The difference is that those you listed are actual names of tribes while Redskins is a derogatory term. I think its totaly fin to have the Florida State Seminoles, the tribe has given their blessing to the use of that name (and probably recieves a royalty?) but Redskins are a different thing.

The censored name is the N-word. As I understand Redskin and N-word is equally bad in they eyes of the people the word is used about.

If they would change it I think it would be a good choice. Similar to the old one and representing something to be proud of.

Yeah, but to whom is it derogatory? The Native American tribes of North America or the politically correct Washington D.C. city council? That's my point. This smacks of your typical inept government body highlighting an issue of national attention in an attempt to justify their positions on the council, IMO. I don't find it derogatory or offensive, it's the name of a football team with a storied history or what I call small potatoes.

There's a full-blooded Chippewa that comes into the barber shop on occassion and we have asked him his opinion on this, in the past. He has no problem with the name. Below is another more recent approval of the name by a Native American. I just think it's a contentious non-issue raised by non-Native Americans who have an axe-to-grind. What next? PETA gonna' force teams with names like Lions, Ravens, Dolphins to change their names? Aren't Jaguars on the endangered species list? Where does it end? Should religious organizations lobby against use of the name "Saints" in New Orleans? You can't please all the people all the time.

Changing an NFL team name would require the approval of the League and it's sponsors as well, if I understand the process correctly. I don't see it happening, nor do I think it should happen. It's just smoke & mirrors by the D.C. city council overreaching & trying to legislate morality/private industry ... this, from a city that elected a convicted crackhead for a mayor, :chuckle:.

.

Several months ago, Prince George’s County resident Stephen Dodson reached out to the Washington Redskins in an effort to share his perspective on the team name.

Dodson is a full-blooded American Inuit chief originally from the Aleutian Tribes of Alaska, and said he was tired of being spoken for as a Native American.

People are speaking for Native Americans that aren’t Native American. Being a full-blooded Indian with my whole family behind me, we had a big problem with all the things that were coming out [of the discussion],” he said. “I think they were basically saying that we were offended, our people were offended, and they were misrepresenting the Native American nation.

We don’t have a problem with [the name] at all; in fact we’re honored. We’re quite honored.

As the eldest member of his blood line, Dodson represents more than 700 remaining tribe members and talked to Redskins Nation about the positive power of the Redskins’ name.

“It’s actually a term of endearment that we would refer to each other as,” he explained. “When we were on the reservation, we would call each other, ‘Hey, what’s up redskin?’ We would nickname it just ‘skins.’”

“‘Redskin’ isn’t something given to us by the white man or the blue eyes, it was something in the Native American community that was taken from us. [It’s] used also as a term of respect, because that’s how we were. We respected each other with that term.”

Despite being thousands of miles away from his family’s homeland, Dodson said that he has continued living and teaching his family traditions in the greater Washington, D.C. community.

“All of us have a proud history of who we are, and I pass it down to my kids,” he said. “We go to powwows, just the normal things for Native Americans. We don’t just celebrate one nation, we celebrate many.”

Part of that celebration is having a sports team in his adopted area that reflects the pride he feels for his own native culture.

“It is [an honor], it’s a heritage. There’s a lot of respect in it. A great pinnacle part of who we are as a nation has to do with pride and honor. And the Redskin name is that,” he said. “That’s one of the things we use as honor and respect toward each other.

“It’s not degrading in one bit and that’s why I sent you guys an email. It just bothered me that somebody would twist something so negatively when it’s a positive.”

Dodson said he was upset that much of the discussion over the Redskins name was being led by people outside of the Native American community.

“[I am] Irritated. Irritated is a polite term to say,” he said. “When you have people trying to represent our nation, you should be from our nation. Don’t represent our nation if you don’t even have an ounce of blood in you.

“It’s wrong, and it’s going to be stopped as long as I’m on this earth—that’s for sure.”

On a personal note, Chief Dodson confessed that while he was raised to be a Washington Redskins fan by his father, he was in fact a lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan.

But he assured viewers that this did not detract from his appreciation for the Washington Redskins organization. If anything, it enhances the sentiment.

“My father was a Redskins fan. He and I had many battles and war parties in the house,” he said with a fond smile. “But to do the right thing is what he raised me to do, and he loved the Redskins.

“I remember when the Redskins won in ’87 and Ronald Reagan threw to the wide receiver [Ricky Sanders], we were there for that. For my father, when they won, it was a huge deal. I’m an Eagles fan, but we have a division in the NFC East that I would call America’s division.”

Chief Dodson took time away from his job as general manager of Charley’s Crane Service, a company that has proudly served Prince George’s County for more than 56 years.

“It’s an in-house joke because I am an Eagles fan, and the guys that work for me are Redskins fans. We have a rule in the company where I can’t even where Eagles gear, because we support the Redskins,” he said. “You have to support what’s in PG County and DC, and that’s what it is.”

In closing, Redskins Nation host Larry Michael reminded Stephen Dodson that the Washington Redskins’ fight song is ‘Hail to the Redskins.’ Even as an Eagles fan, Dodson said he can sing it with pride.

“That’s a respectful thing,” he said. “A lot of people think that’s a gimmick or a joke, a good song, but that’s a respectful thing, and it’s another thing that helps me appreciate everything you’re doing.”

I'm offended by politically correct losers.... far more than a WORD like "redskins".

Tell them to move out of the USA. We don't need idiots in the gene pool.

Who taught them to be that way, their fathers?

Mine didn't.
