Mike Pouncey 'really feels bad' for Eagles' Riley Cooper

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper has been excused from team activities after it became clear that his presence would be a divisive one in the wake of a racially insensitive comment he made at a Kenny Chesney concert.

Miami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey is now coming to the defense of his former Florida Gators teammate.

"I spent three years in college with him. I feel bad for him. That's not Riley Cooper," Pouncey told NFL.com's Jeff Darlington on Friday. "I know him. I know his family. I wasn't offended by it because I know him. It's just an ugly situation, and I really feel bad for him. I'll reach out to him eventually -- but I want things to die down. I don't want to be one of those guys trying to give him advice."

Pouncey can sympathize with Cooper after the controversy ignited by the "Free Hernandez" hats that he and his twin brother, Maurkice, donned in support of another troubled former Florida teammate.

"I know what he's going through right now. ... One mistake can really hurt," Pouncey explained. "I know he's disgusted with himself -- and I just hope he gets through it. It feels like the lowest point of your career. You're thinking, 'I can't believe I'm that guy who made that mistake.' You don't want to be that guy."

The support from Pouncey, former teammate Cullen Jenkins and current Eagles teammates Michael Vick and Jason Avant suggests the larger problem with Cooper might be shattering the intoxication barrier as opposed to outright bigotry.

Another Urban Meyer protege making headlines? Go figure, eh? ... my impression was not that he was being racist, but that he was just being a stupid white-boy trying to emulate behavior he's been exposed to and/or fascinated by ... you know, like junior high schoolers so often do. So, I guess either no one told him the word is offensive or he couldn't figure it out for himself?

I don't understand how these guys reach adulthood without realizing what is socially acceptable or how to conduct themselves in the public eye.

Sober, the guy would have never said that. It is when people get some alcohol in them that the trouble starts.

This was unfortunate for Riley. I just hope for his sake this 'blunder' doesn't cost him his job in Philly.

I agree with slo-mo just being stupid, but if we are going to take action against any player for using the N-word... Good luck fielding a team.

Vick went to jail, and he never should have. The next time somebody goes out there and shoots a deer, hog, duck, or rabbit they need to go to jail too. They're all animals.

My opinion, Riley shouldn't be punished at all. And no, not because of this stupid reasoning that "they say it all the time" or "listen to the rappers". He shouldn't be punished because its a word, and black people such as myself need to stop trying to tell people what they can or can't say. People should be able to say what they want, and in turn be willing to accept whatever reaction they garner from a person. You want to say it, then take your chances. Because I've been saying it my whole life and have never had a problem, so there's no cause for me to stop. If a white person says it to me, I'm a little uneasy, but not offended. He's got to deal with the rest of the league now on the field. That's punishment enough.

There is a fundamental difference between animals dying for food/sport quickly and humanely , and dying in an illegal sport for entertainment slowly and painfully for profit.

Vick tortured those dogs.

We don't know if Vick tortured anything. He didn't go to jail for animal cruelty. He went to jail for hosting an illegal gambling ring.

Killing for food is one thing, but killing for sport is no different. You're killing an animal for your own pleasure. Because you want to. Because you enjoy killing the animal.

Mind you, I don't care if people hunt, kill, or torture animals in the 1st place. I'm not an animal sympathizer. Is it unnecessary? Yeah. Do I really care? Nah. If you want to hunt, hunt. Want to fight pitbulls, fight pitbulls. Roy Jones does the rooster fighting. Its all the same.

Just my opinion.

Your opinion lack based other than you think so.

There is a huge difference, it's called waste.

If I hunt a cow for food it is the same as a slaughterhouse putting beef on the table...
If I hunt a cow and leave the meat to rot it is illegal and wasteful.

What he did was illegal .. Some would say that is difference enough and reason to go to jail... Breaking the law that is.

When enough people do illegal things, the government starts to take away the rights of the lawful.

You're not going to eat a pit bull. Killing it isn't wasting anything. I'll never waiver on the fact that he was overly punished for that. He should've did community service or maybe a month or two for the gambling ring. They made an example out of him because people were crying over the dogs.

As far as the cow scenario, if not for it being illegal to just leave it there due to it being a food source, more people would do things like that.

Cows are not killed for other than food because there is no sport. no challenge...

I support Vick, and I support Cooper. If he plays this season they're going to light his ass up though. You know the main places I've been called the "n" word with either intent to disrespect, be funny, or because it was assumed to be okay? The football field, and the locker room. Some of these guys need to stop pretending to be so shocked. They should be used to it by now.

In the interest of being fair.

Had Cooper had a target for his stupidity then he should get punished... If the intended target was not a friend.

It also matters how he said it... Did it end with "er" or "ah"? That matters.

Apparently the "ah" version is an acceptable colloquialism between 35yo and younger "gangstas" of all races.

The "er" version originated in W. Africa and is the name of the river with the same name as the country and the root word for Nigeria, but because slaves were labeled with the word much like someone being called a Texan it has become the one sole word that could silence a crowd of 1 million people when uttered loud enough.

Controversially.... it can be a highly inflammatory term depending on quite a few factors that no one person can completely quantify.

I doubt Cooper was cheering for that Countries soccer team.

I gave a speech on it in college. Got a 95 because. 5 points off because I never wrote down any speech I gave.

I used to get offended, but I started treating it like any other word intended to disrespect me. I also continue to use it in my every day language, even as s child. Its just a part of the culture of my generation, and yeah, it is starting to leak into other races vocabulary. They think its cool. Idk man, other races find us cool and fascinating for some reason. Lol.

I'm not going to stand here and pretend or allow you to pretend that there isn't context to the two events. Murdering an animal because it is threatening you, your family, your way of life, or killing for food does not fall into the same category as torturing and murdering animals for sport. That isn't an opinion it is a fact.

Mike Vick should have went to jail. Mike Vick should have been allowed to play for any team willing to employ him.

Let me tell you flat out- if a black person used that word at work I would have them fired for it because I would be offended. If he wasn't I would sue in heart beat. So hunting season is for the animals that are threatening us huh? Interesting. Hunting for sport or fun is okay, because its not dog hunting right? Dogs are obviously superior animals to others right? I've heard of this logic before.

And I don't believe for a second you'd be offended. That's just you being a dick and trying to teach a group of people a lesson about something that if it was just respected, wouldn't be a problem.

We know amongst each other not to say it at work, mainly because of people who take up that type of attitude. Don't call that mans wife a loser. That's disrespectful and unnecessary. I see why you have trouble grasping the concept.

As for you to rethink what you said to me, and maybe realize your fail. Seeing how you ended by saying torturing or mudering animals for "sport", example hunting, which is exactly what my initial post eluded to and caused your response.

But that's neither here nor there, you're just outright disrespectful in general, and are justifying it by hiding behind the word candid. So with that said, we can end it right here my n i g g a. Oops, you offended?

There are nuances that you are missing.

Eating what you kill is one thing... Killing something for a trophy isn't illegal but it is not what most hunters do by choice, but there is no intent of pain and suffering on the hunted. Hunters do not fire to wound, and if an animal is wounded it is tracked and put down.

There is also the fact that hunters do not hunt domesticated animals. Putting two domesticated animals in a ring and having them fight to the death is cruelty.

I have hunted since I was a child, I have nothing hanging on my walls to show for any of my kills. Nothing stuffed as a trophy.. I had a rabbit pelt once but the meat was eaten.

Your opinion on hunters and hunting is akin to a little old ladies opinion on gang members.
