Donovan McNabb sounds skeptical of Chip Kelly’s offense

Donovan McNabb lasted 11 seasons in Philadelphia. He sounds skeptical that the new offense being ushered in by new Eagles coach Chip Kelly can last as long.

McNabb told CSNPhilly.com that the read option is “just a fad,” and he thinks the Eagles are going to struggle to keep up with Kelly’s fast-paced attack all season.

“I don’t know if any offensive player would want to run 90 plays in a game. If you’re running 90 plays in a game, that means your defense is pretty awful and you’re running entirely too many plays,” McNabb said. “At Oregon, [Kelly] may have ran 75 plays in a game, but you’re not going to run 85, 90, not in the NFL, and teams and defensive coordinators are a lot better than what you’re going to see in college.”

McNabb acknowledged that the Eagles’ offense has looked good so far, but he believes it’s also important to be able to play ball control offense, especially with a lead.

This is coming from a guy who would puke in the huddle while in Philly and wasn’t able to run a 2 minute offense while in Washington because the coaches thought he was out of shape.

Mcnabb has consistently shown he is a "hater" ever since since he retired.

I need someone to please explain why his number will be retired?

He is no Reggie White.

MacNabb may be hatin', but he has a point.

What exactly is the benefit of aiming at running 90 plays a game in the NFL?
What is the benefit of only using half the clock on every snap?

If you are losing in the latter part of the 4th quarter by more than 7, ok, but otherwise, aiming at 80-90 offensive snaps, seems to me Vick is going to be hurt and in IR by week 4 instead of his usual week 8-9.

More opportunities to score means more scoring probably. SP used Operation Ambush in the SB to extricate an extra possession. I wish the Saints went more no huddle than they do now.

What's wrong with innovation?!?

The Run & Shoot had its day and was exposed by the Bills against Houston in a come from behind playoff game...

But it had an effect on today's game with receivers making reads and predetermined adjustiments to routes...

Sid Gilman gave us what evolved into the modern "pro set" and downfield passing game; many thought he was whack then...

It may fail, it may end up succeeding but the spirit of innovation should never cease...

I'm not so sure Sean Payton hasn't gotten his proper, positive due besides a beatdown from the lawyer masking as a commissioner; some of the things he is doing really is amazing...

If it works. Do it. Maybe if they had a better D.

I do think he has a poinr as running the amount of plays they are will wear down players and lead to fatigue and injuries later in the season.I can see them being great sep-nov but falking away in December and a first round playoff exit.

McNabb does come across as a bitter old man these days in general.

The more I see him, the more it appears to be true. He has a real negative/critical manner about him that just doesn't mesh with his marginal success as a player.

Anybody catch Ray Lewis in the MNF pregame with Steve Young and, who I thought because I wasn't paying that close attention, Rob Rubick? It seemed to me he was trying too hard to appear intelligent/engaging while searching for those hard-hitting, pertinent questions all investigative reporters search for,.

Hey, give him a chance I guess, but I don't think he's gonna' make it.

Their is no benefit.

Saints are even dialing back more and playing ball control to keep the defense off the field more than ever.

Its called Complimentary football, something the Eagles refuse to do.

McNabb never has anything positive to say about anything. Ever.

Was Rush right when he was briefly on ESPN in stating he was not as good as he was being touted at the time?

McNabb is right for once... After that first game defenses have already caught up to his option offense and that's why they sit at 1 - 2...

Re: Donovan McNabb sounds skeptical of Chip Kelly’s offense

Just going off my own two eyes, the Eagles were clearly gassed and dinged up at the end, in their game I watched against the Redskins. It says a lot, that the Redskins were methodically able to come back from such a huge 26-7 deficit, and make it so close at the end. That's basically an Achilles Heel type thing right there. Hate to say it, but it is a lot like a college game, where a 21 point lead at halftime, is basically nothing, it's worthless.
