Three-week preseason, 14-team playoffs could be coming

Three-week preseason, 14-team playoffs could be coming

While the NFL would prefer to expand the regular season from 16 games to 18, the league’s health and safety concerns come off as hollow if the NFL adds 32 games to the current workload of 256.

The fallback, then, unless and until the NFLPA decides to pursue expansion of the regular season on its own, will be to shrink the preseason and replace the revenue with more playoff games.

Commissioner Roger Goodell recently hinted at it, and Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the end result could be a three-week preseason and two more playoff teams.

The expansion to 14 would add two more playoff games, with the No. 2 seed in each conference playing the No. 7 seed. Under that scenario, only the No. 1 seed in each conference would have a bye, and wild-card weekend would have six games instead of four.

While the NFL has full discretion to cut the preseason in half under the labor deal, the NFLPA would have to agree to any increase in the regular season or postseason. Though the union’s position on expanded playoffs isn’t known, the players would be far more likely to embrace two extra playoff games than two extra weeks of games.

I think they been needing new playoff teams added for a long time.

When we started seeing 9-7 teams go to the SB and win it, should open the door for a couple more teams to get into the mix.

We have too many playoff teams already. What sport sends nearly 40% of the league to the playoffs?

This is entirely driven by revenue and has nothing to do with competition.

I don't watch Basketball but 14 play off teams is 43%. 12 teams is still 38%.

It completely waters down the "play off contender" title..... That's nearly 1/2 the league and doesn't differentiate any team based on skill.

I don't know the exact numbers but it is REALLY easy to get into the playoffs in basketball. Barely over .500 is typically good enough to get in. It's also completely different, in that you have to win a series in order to advance in basketball; so most of the time, the better team truly DOES win out the series.

But football playoffs are one and done, and to my mind, this just opens up all sorts of problem scenarios of like, a really good team like a Seattle or a Texans, getting pushed out of the playoffs by mediocre teams, who catch a lucky break (bad weather, turnovers, or a string of fluke plays). So you have an 8-8 or 9-7 team that suddenly knocks out the heavy favorite #2 seed -- as a fan of the GAME, not a specific team, that's NOT what I want to see.

Like take the year that Seattle beat us, for instance (Ugh, I am sorry to make you think of it). Then they got completely annihilated by whoever it was they played the next week.... Other than the injuries at the running back position, including Reggie Bush, the Saints were a better team that year, at EVERY position group, who just ran out of gas at RB that day, and laid an egg. But the "wrong" team advanced. Adding extra playoff games would cause that sort of thing to happen ALL THE FREAKING TIME. Because of losing a bye or increasing injuries etc.

So if they do this, be prepared to see a lot of ugly playoffs games with things like, Kirk Cousins at QB instead of RGIII, Eagles without LeSean McCoy,.

The other thing about adding games that no one from the NFL seems to think about -- coaches will start DROPPING GAMES early in the year, if they know they don't need them. Playing Seattle or SF early the year? Why bother risking injuries, when you know that 9-7 will be enough to get you into the playoffs? Those garbage games and resting players at the end of the year, will STILL be happening, just early in the year, if coaches realize they don't need to win every game every week, to get into the playoffs.

i dont like it because it ruins season records from years past. I was against the new overtime rule as well(if you got a feildgoal, the other team has a chance to score).to me,it kinda ruins the history of the sport.

Longer OT = More commercial sales... Its a revenue game.

Well the thing is is this happens regardless if they added additional teams to the playoffs.

Whats a little unnerving to me is the fact the last 15-20 years, we see more and more upsets and shockers than ever. Like 7-9 Seattle team beating us, or Cardinals getting into the SB, as well as seeing just so much BS like this as I call it.

You go back as far as the early 90s and before, you pretty much knew how a game was going go and where to rack up those wins unless you faced even competition. You would not see these upsets all that often in the playoffs either, you knew before the playoffs who was going to end up in the SB pretty much. Only thing you didnt know was who was going to win the SB. Nowadays.............I think Vegas has put too much power into the game so their is far more shockers, upsets, what have you. These silly rule changes aid it all as well.

I cant remember who it was but it was on Yahoo of all places and they bought up interesting scenario that would stop those bad teams from getting in, like we got 10-6 team out, and a 7-9 team in, that was go back to the days when the NFC or perhaps the entire NFL if it was pre 1970 revert to 2 divisions per conference. That would certainly put the best teams in and worse teams out. But something like that is probably 20 years too late.
