A Question, for Those Who Know Football

Better than I, and that would be almost everyone I suspect.

These really good defenses, like Carolina, and the Panther's, and San Francisco, seem to have really ferreted out the screen passes. It seems like we could use that to our advantage. Is there any such thing as a "fake" screen pass, then doing something to take advantage of an out-of-position group of linebackers?

If there is to be any hope of beating Seattle, assuming we get past Philly, we need to come up with several deceptive, fake things, to change the dialogue a bit.

You can always "fake" a screen, sort of how play-action works. The screens have to be working to get them to bite, just like the run has to be working for the play-action to really work...

Doesn't it kind of clear out over the middle? I guess you're giving up a couple of linemen on the left, or right, who are pulling out to block. So whatever alternate plan you have, needs to be executed quickly.

well if you have linemen already pulling to block the screen, then you're not really faking it anymore...

Well that's what I mean, you pull the linemen, you send the guy out to catch, then you do something else entirely, whether it's run the opposite way with the rest of the linemen, or hand off to go the other way or throw it over the center.

There just seems like there would be a way to take advantage of the hyper aggressive nature of those offenses.

That might work a couple of times, then they start sending blitzes and you risk Drew getting smashed

Yea, of course you could actually run the screen plays then, as maybe they'd take a bit more time considering before they bite on it. Seriously, some of those teams were on them with bone-crunching hits immediately after them catching the ball. (Kuechley)

If the defense to bite on the screen pass, then a pass just off center downfield will do it. Especially if the safety is not at home.

I've always thought a delayed handoff works well, even when recievers are down field, usually the middle of the field is open. Fake the screen, delayed hand off or shuffle pass, we don't run enough of them if you ask me.

Right.
The screen is the fake.
Cammie and Carolina run that double screen, but it didn't work either time against us
