Johnny Football a Possible Cowboy?

The Seattle Seahawks did the impossible and won the Super Bowl with a 5'11", 206-pound quarterback running the offense. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will find it tempting to follow Seattle's lead and trade up to draft Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, but he needs to focus on the defense in the 2014 draft.

When Wilson entered the 2012 draft he dropped down to the third round because he did not possess prototypical size. He performed so well in training camp that he earned the starting quarterback spot despite the fact that Seattle had signed Matt Flynn to a large free agent contract to be their starting quarterback.

Wilson set the NFL on fire as a rookie passing for 3,357 yards and 26 touchdowns while rushing for 539 yards and a touchdown. He proved that size does not matter at quarterback when you can improvise in the pocket and make plays.

Meanwhile, Johnny Manziel was setting the college game on its head while becoming the first freshman to ever win the Heisman Trophy in 2013. Manziel, like Wilson, is an undersized quarterback who excels at improvising when a play breaks down and hurting defenses with both his arm and his feet.

He set an SEC record during his first year of college football by compiling 5,116 total yards of offense. In 2014 Manziel passed for 4,114 yards and rushed for 759 yards while scoring 46 total touchdowns.

Manziel's stellar play on the field has resulted in him being projected as a top five pick in the 2014 NFL draft. The Cowboys are waiting on a coin flip to see if they will have the No. 16 or the No. 17 selection in the first round. If they want to draft Manziel, they will have to make trades to move up in the first round.

Will never happen. Romo is signed through 2019 and his cap figures make him impossible to get rid of until 2017.

Get a load of these figures: Tony Romo
2014 cap hit $21m / dead money $41m
2015 cap hit 25m / dead money $20m
2016 cap hit 15m / dead money 11.6m

Bryant and Murray are FA in 2015.
Ware FA in 2016.

In 2014 Dallas had the 16th or 17th pick depending on the coin flip.

Won't happen. Even if Dallas didn't have cap issues, Manziel isn't the answer here in Death star nation. Start with the Owner/GM aka Jerry Jones and work your way down. America's team ... lmao.

Re: Johnny Football a Possible Cowboy?

It's more than size and stats. I'm not sure that Wilson's performance is transferable to Manziel. First, and foremost, Wilson has discipline. Manziel is anything but disciplined. Second, though Wilson is not your prototypical tall NFL QB he is a decent pocket passer. He scrambles when the protection breaks down, creating completions. Mansiel seems to really struggle from the pocket. Against LSU, he was 16/41 for 299 yds and 10 points. Against Missouri he only threw for 195 yards. In both games opposing Ds did a pretty good job of keeping him in the pocket.

All of that said, JJ is likely to do his best to draft Mansiel. To be honest I hope he does because I see Mansiel being more of an RG3 than a Wilson.

Manziel in JJ's hands is like center cut tenderloin on the plate of Larry the Cable guy.

Yep, I heard Mel Kiper mentioning these teams as possible landing spots for Johnny football this morning.

Re: Johnny Football a Possible Cowboy?

I seriously doubt Manziel making out of the top two, I think the Rams will trade down with a team in desperate of a franchise QB, being said if he isn't taken no. 1 overall.

I could see the rams trading down for a team that wants Clowney. Hopefully that's not Atlanta.
