Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

I don't do a lot of "what about" threads but Devin Hester will not be back with the Bears. He may be 31 years old and has lost a step but the thing about return guys is not so much the speed but the knowing when to zig and knowing when to zag...

He was pricy with the Bears, perhaps we could get him for less than Sproles?

Re: Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

Wouldn't Ted Ginn be cheaper and have a little mote alround use?.
Not a great fan of his either

Re: Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

You can have all the speed in the world but hester just has the knack for kick and punt returns

Hester is to kick returns what PT is to screen passes, I'd be happy if we could get him for cheap and use him as a return specialist only

Ginn is younger and there is probably a price difference but there is also a performance difference.

I thought Hester was having some concussion issues.

Ginn's freakin' fast. Maybe we could figure a way to sneak some stickum on his hands...

Re: Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

Didn't read the stats before.
Surprised at the difference, I thought Hester was worse and Ginn better.

Re: Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

I wouldn't sign anyone exclusively as a returner:

The NFL has taken the KO return out of the game.
Although Sproles is no longer explosive as a returner, he is reliable.
Punt and KO return TD's are really no longer a part of the game.

I agree that return TDs are pretty much nullified but Hester is averaging 28 yards per KO return and 15 yards per PR, to Sproles 21 KO and 6 PR.

That translates to starting from the 30 instead of 20 and an extra 7 yards on put returns. That is big difference and advantage. How many times has 7-10 yards put us out of FG range? Keep in mind that Shayne Graham could certainly use that 7-10 yards with his leg.

Sproles did really drop off on PR, and that KR stat is actually worse when you consider that he started those returns 5 yards deep

I think Rezburna may have said it best... "I would prefer a guy who is a exclusively a kick return guy and nothing else". Devin fits that title and I would welcome him to the B&G to take over kick return duty.

Hester is also dual purpose, he was also a receiver up till last year. Id rather see Hester on a reverse than Josh Hill :)

Re: Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

Too little cap space with too many critical needs at Starting Center, Right Tackle, Outside Linebacker and Safety to worry about signing an aged return specialist -> Pass

Depends on price. A Sproles replacement at the right price would free up cap space.

Trindon Holliday is another free agent. Broncos won't make tender offer.

Has a bad case of the fumbles.

Fine... Slut

Do not expect a Christmas card this year.

I think the Bears had an all around better ST unit than the Saints have ever seen. Hester here would be an average returner.
IMO

Re: Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

I believe our kick returner will be settled in the draft, hester sounds spicy but just for kick returner won't happen. call me homer, if odell Beckman falls to us , punt return, kick offs, wide receiver, reverses gunner. problem solved. not counting his hands are like 12 inchs in circumference . guy has to be related to spider man.

Re: Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

Hester would be playing indoor games more and on field turf so he could break a few. I was always comfortable to see Lewis and Roby returning kicks and I'd rather the field advantage those type of players bring than a #5 WR that does nothing except block on ST.

Twice as much as I'm going to do in the future.

I want somebody young. Young + speed = how to beat Seattle and other playoff teams.

Re: Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

Titans signed McCluster. 12mil over 3 years.

Re: Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

Falcons signed Hester. 3 years.

If they really move kickoffs to the 40 yard line this could be very expensive move.

That surprises me. He was asking for a lot. After they signed Javier Arenas, I wouldn't think they'd pay for Hester.

He wanted 4mil a year. I don't think he got that much. If he did, then they are morons.

On TAFT message board they're saying $10mil over 3 years. (but it's TAFT, so take it for what it's worth) and they were morons long before the Hester deal.

Re: Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

Hahaha! Good job Failclowns... I'm sure it will be worth the money watching him stand there while Morstead kicks it out of the end zone.

Saintswrath 03-20-2014 03:24 PM

Re: Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

Bone headed move by the Falcons, EASY money for Hester.. Owners are voting to have the kickoff's moved to the 40 and Kickers are already kicking it out of the Endzone with ease lmao.. "SMH" i love it.!

stickman 03-20-2014 03:40 PM

Re: Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

Actually don't think this is a bad move. If he can break a good return, it's a big spark for the team.

If you don't believe in special teams, you don't believe in field position.

ChrisXVI 03-20-2014 03:53 PM

Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

The Failclowns needed pass rushers and a better O-Line... So they sign 2 run-stoppers, a guard who was benched last season and 2 kick returners. Not to mention, they also need a free safety and starting TE... Atlanta, sometimes you make me smile.

Agreed. ST is one part of the game that is undervalued. Hester is up in age but still a game changer .. I just hope he doesn't make highlights against us.

Re: Devin Hester (leaving Bears)

this is great

Hester will be busy trying to field kicks out of the endzone all the time after we score
