The Lions need help at cornerback, and they may get it in the form of an aging star.

Champ Bailey, who was cut by the Saints at the end of the preseason, is in Detroit for a workout today, according to Tim Twentyman of the Lions’ website.

Although the 36-year-old Bailey is nowhere near the player he was in his prime, when he was a seven-time All-Pro, he’s still probably good enough to start in Detroit, where the Lions are in desperate need of an upgrade. The Lions currently have veteran Rashean Mathis and second-year player Darius Slay as their starters.

As a vested veteran, Bailey’s contract would be guaranteed if he’s signed before Week One. If the Lions like what they see in the workout with Bailey, they may decide to add him beginning with Week Two. And hope they can survive Week One with the cornerbacks they have.
