10 greatest Thanksgiving Day games in NFL history

Saints-Cowboys made the Top 5.

No. 4: Saints 30, Cowboys 27 (2010)

The Saints won their first Super Bowl the year before this game and then made their first appearance on the Thanksgiving stage in a matchup with the Cowboys.

The defending champs blew a 17-0 lead and literally had to steal this victory in the final minutes.

Dallas took a 27-23 lead—its first of the game—after Tashard Choice scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:56 left in the contest. The Saints went three-and-out, and the Cowboys were in a position to run out the clock. Roy Williams caught a 47-yard pass and reached the Saints’ 11-yard line with 3:03 left.

But just when it looked like Jon Kitna would out-duel Drew Brees, Malcolm Jenkins stripped the ball from Williams—who thought he had a sure touchdown after getting behind the defense. He recovered the fumble in what was one of the most bizarre plays in recent years.

Brees didn’t mess around. He needed just five plays to take the lead. After a 55-yard completion to Robert Meachem, he threw a 12-yard scoring strike to Lance Moore to make it 30-27 with two minutes left.

Kitna could only get the Cowboys to the Saints’ 41-yard line, and with 31 seconds left David Buehler tried to tie the game with a 59-yard field goal. He had the distance, but it was wide left by just a few feet.

The Cowboys finished 6-10. The Saints went 11-5, but their title defense ended abruptly in a 41-26 loss to the 7-9 Seahawks in a Wild Card game at Seattle.

Ironically enough, the script may be flipped this year. It could be the Saints’ turn to host a playoff game despite a sub-.500 finish.
