Tom Brady On Rigors Of Practicing At 40: ‘I’m Never Sore’

Tom Brady is in better shape at age 40 than he was at age 30, or even as a rookie. His dedication to staying in the best shape possible and avoiding serious injuries has certainly played a role in his ability to play at an elite level even into his late-30s.

But according to Brady, not only is practice not that hard, it doesn’t even hurt.

Conventional wisdom is that professional football is a rigorous game for anyone who plays. Even just practicing would leave just about anyone at least feeling sore after a day of running around, hitting the turf, and crashing into other large humans.

Not Brady.

“I’m never sore,” Brady told reporters after the Patriots-Texans joint practice at the GreenBrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. “I could practice every day. I could practice twice a day if they let us do that, but that’s not the way it goes anymore. It’s just fun out here competing.”

It helps that Brady can’t be hit during practices, but no soreness whatsoever?

Brees has pretty much the same year round conditioning routine as Brady. That's why people that feel Brees' career is close to the end are greatly mistaken. If both Brady and Brees claim they can continue playing at the same high level well into their forties I believe them. They are both in better condition today than your average 30 year old QB was twenty years ago and 30 was considered in their prime.

The fact that QBs hardly get hit anymore helps too...

I look at tennis and how Federer made his comeback and kicked everyone's ass this year in straight sets. Seeing that, Brady and Drew who are also dedicated and intelligent are going to be heard from for more years for sure.

Is that because of the wife.

Slightly off topic but I am going to post this here instead of starting a new thread.

I don't consider Brady the GOAT because he has played in arguably the worst division in football; New England to me is the same as the 40-whiners were in the 80s/90s.

The whiners benefitted from playing in a weak division during their golden age as well, although after Mora joined the Saints they made it somewhat harder but SF still pretty much knew they were going to win the division each year; their only real test was when they had to play the NFC East.

I will go so far as to say that if Brady and the Patriots had to play in the NFC South, especially during the Payton/Brees era that I don't believe Brady would have a single Super Bowl ring.

I'm not taking anything away from them easy division or not. Good organization. As for playing in his 40's, nothing new. I would be more surprised if he said it's much harder with the year long conditioning, dieting, medical knowledge today and not getting hit old school with a push to the face to the ground.

My dad used to tell me about some of those battles from the 80's but for me, Joe Montana was the QB. Poised, cool under fire and could always seem to find the open man when it mattered most.
