Re: Bears GM Ryan Pace Voted Sporting News Executive Of The Year For 2018

Funny story from my life...

Close Friend was a VP with Monster.com when it was a big, came in to NoLa for one of those big Monster.com Convention/Rally's about ten years ago and we met in the evenings while he was in town for the week...

Anyways, he was hosting VIP recruiters each night and Monster paid for dinner, entertainment as he hosted and as I acted as the local eatery and tour guide showing them different places about town...

One night he had a couple of people from Sporting News there recruiting HR recruiters for sports writers and Mark & I got into a discussion with them about the previous Executive of the Year, Mickey Loomis...

Mark still laughs about the looks on their faces as priceless when I flipped their congratulatory tone for having the Executive of the Year and how smart he was for picking Marques Colston in the seventh round...

"Haslett did everything in his personal lifestyle to get fired, including consecutive years humping co-eds in Thibodaux, resulting in personal/team paternity suits, but was really fired because of his Brooks love...

...so the stars lined up and Payton and Brees came to us as their other options didn't want them so they fell to us. And if Colston in the 7th won it that's a joke as all 32 teams passed on him for 6 rounds...

Let's not forget Loomis is also the guy that gave up two mid-first round picks for Jonathan Sullivan, including passing on Troy Polamalu..."

Mark & I have some great sports stories together including gettin' into it with Lou Pinella at Fenway on the local news, talking SoLa charter fishing with Red Aurebach, and flying 1st class next to Ted Williams...

but that's still one of Mark's favorites...

It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

Raiders get: 2019 first-round pick, 2020 first-round pick, 2020 third-round pick, 2019 sixth-round pick.

WHICH TEAM GOT CLOSER TO THE SUPERBOWL? THE BEARS OR THE SAINTS?

Interesting trend going on....

In the past three seasons, a second year coach has made the SB.

Dan Quinn with the Falcons in 2016
Doug Pedersen with Philly in 2017
Sean McVay with the Rams in 2018

Will Chicago continue the trend with Matt Nagy? I'd feel really scared of the Bears had they kept Vic Fangio. They were the one team that I feared meeting in the playoffs the most last year due to Fangio's history of disrupting our offense. That defense should be fine this year, but Pagano is no where close the coordinator that Fangio is.

Would be interesting if this trend is kept alive from an AFC coach. Frank Reich will be a second year coach in Indy next year and for my money, the Colts are the team to make a serious run. I don't believe Kansas City has what it takes to beat New England. There really isn't anyone in the AFC for the Pats to worry about except the Colts, if they continue to improve.

Bears? With that defense? In that division? Maybe. It'll be Year 3 for Trubisky. Problem is Nagy hasn't figured out (as Payton forgot) you have to pound the rock as well as pass and they traded Jordan Howard...

Now, I don't know if they can survive the toughest division in the NFL, the AFC South, but I'd keep an eye on Frank Reich and the Colts; same goes with Vrabel and the Titans, but they still need a QB to step up...

Jon Gruden is quickly, and wisely, getting the Raiders house in order, doing a great job of accruing some serious draft capital, but there two years away as they reset that team's culture as well...

Matt Patricia had a great teacher, but again they've got a team culture problem there is well, and he's attempted to address it; but I'm not sold that Lions' QB Matthew Stafford is a winner...

Pat Shurmur is also getting the G'nats House in order and can get it done if he can get an offensive line that can protect, keep Eli Manning upright before his age becomes a factor...

Wilks didn't make Year 2 with Rosen, nor does it matter if the Cardinals reset at QB after one year, without an offensive line, they're going nowhere with the Rams, reloading 49ers, Seahawks in their division...

It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

Living in Indy I was sure it was going to be a Saints - Colts rematch in the Super Bowl last year. I think the Colts got the "true" brains behind the Eagles offense.

Still gotta "hit" on those high draft picks. It will help having Mike Mayock as GM/evaluator of talent in Raider Nation.

Time will tell ...
