As the oil licks at our shores I would like to remember the things we will never see again:

Oyster Poboys
Shrimp Poboys
Crabs
Crawfish
Going fishing in the lake
Going swimming in the bayous
Seagulls and Pelicans
Ducks
Seafood Gumbo
The Wetlands
Cypress trees
Water sports
Fish
Alligators
Fishing boats
Grand Isle
Casinos in Gulfport


This is going to be the most devestating thing the US has ever seen, especially when the hurricanes come :(

I'm sure the investigation will reveal it could have been easily avoided. So long to the 3rd coast :(

Yeah i dont like it one bit..even over in Texas we will feel the effect of this nasty situation...all we can hope is that it gets all the Goverments attention..this could be very bad for a lot of people....

From talking with family and friends they are very much in dennial and expecting teh government will have this handled soon with only a year of seafood woes to our fisheries and wetlands.

It must be that the scope is so huge their mind doesn't comprehend the catastrophic consequenses this will have on the ecology of everything we have ever known for a very, very long time. Katrina will be a drop in the bucket compared to this. My heart is broken.

If you want to get technical, a hurricane would clear it up. But thats like saying I dont have to worry about snakes in the pond because the gators ate them.

You're not really going to say bye to all this for good. There have been oil slicks before, even large ones, and before the technology and management techniques we have now. So the Coast will bounce back, as it always does. Thats the macro view.

The micro view, is this is going to f--- up some people's lives, for about a year, and Im not wild about the prospect of eating chinese shrimp. But more importantly, this is gonna f--- up some good people's lives for a season. Hopefully they will qualify for some well deserved aid, in getting back in business, and hopefully the feds will use our tax money wisely, and get it to them quickly and efficiently-- (ha.) And thats about as close to political discussion as Im interested in getting.

This is not Katrina II, but it sure f---s up some people's lives, im sure.
Our prayers for them, and help where we can. There will continue to be pelicans, and I will continue to go to the beach.

Yeah bro, but they STILL haven't stopped the oil from coming out of the ground. This isn't really a spill, as much as it's like they can't turn the faucet off. If they could at least stop the oil from it's continuous flowing out of the ground, I would feel alot better about it, than i do now. But they can't figure out how to do it.

My heart goes out to everyone down there, that will feel the ill effects of this tragedy.

Yeah, that was my opinion two weeks ago, and a million gallons earlier.

Without politicizing this thing, I still think we'll bounce back. I still think wildlife will survive. But I dont know whats going to happen to the coastal marshes now, and I dont know how long beach tourism will suffer. And I dont know how long we're gonna have to eat Chinese shrimp. I dont know how many people will lose their livelihoods, and I dont know how this is going to affect people who work in the Oil industry.

Obviously, we have to figure out how to avoid this from happening again, even if the sea is as "self-cleansing" and as vast as some people say, I absolutely hate the idea of polluting. But overreacting, if this is a freak accident, and some things indicate it is, is just as destructive-- to the lives of ordinary working people and the whole economy of Louisiana, and the whole country.

The news update I have this morning is they're lowering a new containment dome today. If they can just stop the bleeding....lets pray...

I wish there was way to know the exact truth, the whole truth about the exact extent of what is going on, without political bias from one side or the other. But I question whether anyone anymore can speak on this without their personal political leanings staining what they have to say.

Im a believer in capitalism, and I dont believe the Oil Industry is the root of all evil. But I love the same things in nature that any common tree hugger loves-- I just like killing and eating them. No, seriously, I love the outdoors, marshes, beaches, birds, fish--- all of creation, and I care about the people who harvest fish and shellfish, and who make their living in the Gulf. I wont throw a beer can out the window. I never litter... not even cigarette butts. I wish there was a large fine for people who trash the outdoors. But I want honest people to make a living.

Its nice that this discussion hasnt turned into Left vs. Right on this board.

Alaska had 12 Million Gallons of Oil leak out, we are close to 1.2 mil, and the cleanup seems to be going decent, even though the oil still leaks, it's sad though..

And i don't want to buy Shrimp, Crawfish and all from China!!!

The figure Im getting from AP, is now 4 million gallons. Not that I consider AP a credible news source. As a media insider, I've seen complete garbage come off their wire, and I can tell you some of their
field reporters are little more than college kids.

The update today is that they've moved the new smaller containment structure near the well, and are double-checking the configurations, and expect to lower the structure tomorrow. They're going to pump warm water and methanol to prevent the ice crystals that stopped the last containment dome. The dome will be connected to a ship by a pipe within a pipe, and I guess the ship will relay the oil to other ships. I have not kept up with what they're doing on the surface, since the last reports over the weekend of booms, burning, and dispersants being used.

Lets pray for that containment dome to line up right and work... If they can stop it now, perhaps summer can be salvaged for some of those affected.
