Deborah Cotton, the writer and second-line advocate who was injured during the shooting at this year's Mother's Day second line, will be the keynote speaker at the annual Rising Tide New Media conference, which will be held Sept. 14 at Xavier University.

"Her voice and perspective serve as an authority on subjects that are associated with the beating heart of New Orleans, but are too often taken for granted or mischaracterized," said Patrick Armstrong, one of the conference's organizers. "She spoke at Rising Tide 6 on the Brass Bands panel, and we're excited to announce that she has joined the lineup as our keynote speaker for Rising Tide 8."

Cotton, who had 11 surgeries in the weeks following the shooting, continues to recuperate.? [ Read more ]
