http://media1.fdncms.com/gambit/imag...1.26.37_pm.png After two hours of public comment and some emotional speeches by councilmembers, the New Orleans City Council today voted 6-1 to declare four Confederate monuments on public land to be a "nuisance," clearing the way for their removal.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu, who has been pushing the ordinance for months, spoke to the council about his reasons and engaged in a testy back-and-forth with Council Vice President Stacy Head, who ended up being the sole 'nay' vote on the matter.
