So long guys.

Hi folks. I'm not going to drag this out and make a long post. First, I'd like to say I think this is a great site and I've enjoyed it very much. And let me also add that I think Halo and JoeSam are very fair with everyone.

This board has changed quite a bit since I first joined. It much better now, IMO. But it has changed ....

And I don't believe I really fit in anymore. (I need a hug - :D )

I suppose I'm one of those folks who loves to go against conventinal thinking. And I'm also one of those folks who never met a good argument that he didn't like.

Lately, instead of adding to the board, I think I've made it worse.

Frustration I suppose.

But, I made a promise to Halo and JoeSam when they allowed me to come back.

It's been brought to my attention that I've been rocking the boat a little too much lately. And I probably have.

However, I can't see myself ever changing. That's about the best behavior you're ever going to get out of me ...

So long, guys ....

Rocking the boat more than usual? I wouldn\'t say that.

It does seem to me that people are sometimes not too content to hear messages that don\'t agree with the standard line.

On the whole, I\'d have to agree that the climate has changed a bit. I\'d be hard pressed to say what it is exctly, but it does feel different around here some days.

After the draft, the slew of negativity was almost too much for me, I\'d have to say. I don\'t like it when it gets like that around here. It seems that it just takes some people much longer to see the positives when their expectations/desires are thwarted.

As for you Billy, some days the third, fourth, or more! post on roughly the same topic can feel like a little much. It is not your contraryness that annoys people, I don\'t think; it is your way of overwhelming people with roughly the same thing for days, if I had to guess. Perhaps a simple rule that would help would be this: don\'t open more than two new threads on the same player or point per day. I bet that would help a lot.

I also feel like some of the time you\'ve gotten some poor press. Some people just don\'t like being challenged. Others (like myself most days) don\'t mind a good discussion, and many, the silent masses for example (you know who you are! join in!), I\'m sure are happy to read posts by people who don\'t just take the party line.

If you are leaving, adieu. I for one hope that no one leaves because they are run off, and I am sad when anyone goes.

mutineer10 05-02-2005 05:07 PM

So long guys.

I can\'t seriously can\'t think of anyone who wants you gone, Gumbo. I read mostly all of your posts, as - given the responses you generate - most all of us seem to. I don\'t think anybody wants you gone - I certainly don\'t - and while we don\'t always agree, you certainly take precedent as the standard bearer for the \"sunshiner\" posters on this board. You play an important role here, and no matter what anyone says to you - Mod or otherwise - the board is a better, more entertaining place when you\'re posting.

If you really wanna go, that\'s your decision and I\'ll not abuse you for that. I think most all of us like having you around and - while we don\'t always agree with you - you provide a valuable service in the way of \"keeping the morale\" of the troops up. I\'d hate to see you leave the ranks, but if that\'s the choice of action, I\'m glad for the times you spent posting here at the BnG.

Hell, it\'s the disagreements that make you think about why you feel the way you feel. Gumbo is quite the contrarian, but he\'s never offended me with any of his posts. He\'s well written, which makes it a little more confounding when some of the opinions come out.

But hey....if we all agreed on everything, this would be a pretty boring place. As long as we disagree respectfully, who cares what another man\'s opinion is. We all root for a frustrating football team, so frustration will tend to run amuck.

It\'s the mods job to govern civility here, but I can\'t say I would wanna see Gumbo hit the road. He seems to love the team, and I respect that.....we all have our own ways of doing it.

i agree in that i hate for anyone to feel run off. as different as some of my views are than billy i do enjoy his ability to stir interest and challenge views. i do tire of some of the style. it isn\'t much prob to generally me cuz i avoid the particular threads or controversy that seem to be more about bickering than issue debate. i am looking forward to hopefully meeting some of the characters here for a game and putting faces to the names. some cold beers together would go a long way for this board too i think.

being a saint fan is hard enough. being a passionate saint fan requires some fortitude or some wackiness. it is like being a good and devoted employee of k-mart... you can give it all but it is difficult to deal with downsizing and bankruptcies. something besides 32-32 would go a long ways to relieving a lot of frustration.

just in the months i have been around here the emotions have run pretty high with the draft, free agency, and the offseason. it is a big deal concerning what fortunes our black n gold boys might have this fall. the draft was rough on me. i like who they got generally. still, i am getting through what might have been. i would have liked to have seen more aggressive addressing the very worst defense in the league, draft and free agency. i think there will be some cooling of emotions or intensity in the regard that we all come to acceptance of what is and build our hopes from that as we can. toss into the equation the lingering benson/state feud clouding the longterm future of the team too. it ain\'t easy!

This is true, Gumbo. People love to read your posts and debate with you. I always wondered if you worked for Halo and it was your job to keep the people worked up. If so, you are very good at what you do. It won\'t be as fun if you go.

Anyway, I will believe it when I see it. I think the odds of your return within the next 7 days are something like 6/5. 1 week to 2 weeks...2/1. I will post further odds as necessary.

Just so you all will know, Billy was NOT asked to leave. If he choses to leave, then that\'s up to him. We have rules and we all must abide by them. Frankly I hate to see him leave but in the end it\'s his choice.

I don\'t think anyone would ask you to leave Gum. Things aren\'t that serious. I guess it is perceived that at times, you say things with the express intent of riling up the masses. And there are other times where you say things it seems with the express intent of riling up certain posters, and I think that\'s where you run into trouble. Cause like it or not, we may not be face to face but people will take things that are directed at them as personal, especially if it is done in a manner as to discredit them and not their argument. But it\'s all good. I disagree with you as much as anyone, sometimes it annoys me, sometimes I enjoy it, but I wouldn\'t wanna see you go. The mix of personalities on here makes for a fun melting point. Stick around bro, if we can\'t make it through the tough times there is no reason to even hope for the good times.

In order for you to make Gumbo, you need a roux, either light or dark.

In a large heavy pot, heat the oil. when the oil is hot, whisk in the flour. Stir the mixture constantly for 15-20 minutes15{ roux. Add the onions, bell peppers, celery, salt, cayenne, and bay leaves. Cook for 12-13 minutes, stirring occasionally until the vegetables are wilted. Add chicken or fish stock and mix to blend with the roux. Simmer for 1 hour and 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the fish pieces and continue cooking for 15 minutes. Add the shrimp and cook for 15 minutes. Add the crabmeat, oysters, green onions and parsley and cook for 2-3 minutes , or until the edges of the oysters curl. Remove from the heat. Add the File` powder to thicken at the end.

Ladle the gumbo in a shallow dish. Place a heaping portion or two of the rice in the center of the gumbo. Sprinkle the green onions over top. Serve with a piece of French bread.

Seems to me it takes a mixture with a touch of the cook...to me that is Billy. All the best to whatever you decide.

A Biloxi native.

Actually I think it use to be worse!!! It has been better of late though. I think one can have a healthy debate even argumenative... as long as no name-calling or personal attacks. I haven\'t seen any personal attacks in a long-time, I could be wrong but everyone has there own definition of what is tolerated and what is across the line.

Take your hat off-stay awhile.

Besides I am with you in full support of Brooks. Brooks is our guy and you can\'t fault him for being forced to make things happen because he has little to no protection ect ect ect.

What is it that makes people feel like they don\'t have a place here..in an open forum?...

Don\'t get me wrong..I too have left before...the main ..well, the only reason I came back is because of the everyday people who post..and pour thier heart and soul into this board.. a board which for some reason..continues to drive away it\'s most active members...but, at the same time...the people here, not the mods..just the people..make this a decent place to hang out...

Billy...I can honestly say that I have never seen you dish out any more than what has been thrown at you..even by mods.....so..I have to ask..what \'\'promise\'\' did you \'\'break\'\'?..I mean...aren\'t we all held to the same standards here?...I cannot remember having to promise to do anything to participate in this board...other than not cursing..and not advertizing other sites..which I have seen noone do...

Just what the heck is going on?...I mean..your a long time member with over 2000 posts...and now your bieng \'\'asked\'\' to leave?

\'\'But, I made a promise to Halo and JoeSam when they allowed me to come back.

It\'s been brought to my attention that I\'ve been rocking the boat a little too much lately. And I probably have. \'\'

What\'s that?...\'\'rocking the boat\'\'....I am baffled...all I have seen you do is debate your opinions and ideas....I have never seen you curse...or advertize other sites...or even attack a person anymore than they are allowed to attack you...

If a guy who participates and contributes as much as you do is not welcomed...just who is?

JKool 05-03-2005 02:40 AM

So long guys.

Shadow, I know your views on some issues, and I respect them, but I ask the following things:

(1) You should not lump all the mods together. We all do our best to make this a great site, and we each have our own methods and style.

(2) No one asked Billy to leave. He had some issues a couple of years back, and he was reinstated on some grounds that you (myself included actually) are not privy to. If he feels that he is not meeting those standards, that is on him; again, he was not asked to leave.

(3) I suspect that each and every person who leaves or feels alienated has their own individual reasons.

(4) This board has not driven away its most active members to my knowledge (at least I\'m having trouble thinking of anyone other than Gator and Billy off the top of my head, and Billy/Gumbo\'s problem appears to be with the \"atmosphere\" and not the mods). If the board has driven off people who really would like to be here, I would like to hear from those people, and I would be most accepting to hear their reasons for departing (by PM, of course). I promise to do what I can to help them feel welcome(again/still).

Thus, if there are general concerns, we (the mods, I guess) are more than interested in hearing what we can do to make this a better place.

Well...I am just confused as to why he was told he was rocking the boat too much?..I mean..was it becasue he was arguing too much?...

When I said Mods..I meant WHODAT...He and Billy have went around the table more than any other people...and I have always seen the same level of aggression come from both..

That\'s where my confusion comes in...What standards are bieng enforced?..I mean..we all checked the same little agreement box...right?..We all like Billy...He a fun guy to have around....and I don\'t understand why he would be restricted more than anyone else?...

I probably shouldn\'t take up for him...but..in a way...I\'m just afraid that his fate may be the fate of anyone at any given time...if someone felt like we were \'\'rocking the boat\'\'..yet..not breaking any rules...

Please don\'t respond in a pm...If he broke a rule..then just say it...I have not seen him do so...that\'s why I \'m troubled...

I have to admit Gumbo that I do not want to see you go -- Usually you will be reasonable when someone engages you seriously-- a trait which I like --- you just react to harshly at times when people do not want to debate or discuss on a serious level. In any case -- don\'t leave -- it really is not necessary or desired

Shadow,

I understand your concern. However, Gumbo has a long history here, and at one time he was banned for breaking rules (that happened early on in my time here, and I don\'t know all the details, and I\'m not sure they matter). He, unlike others who have never been banned from the site for their own behavior, made some promises upon his return - HE felt like HE wasn\'t upholding them.

Gumbo\'s post is unclear with respect to his belief regarding \"rocking the boat\". I\'m not sure how to take that, but it is possible that he just got that sense from comments by other posters.

Either way, people should not worry about being capriciously run off at any momment. Gumbo\'s choices and his current choice have lead to his departure.

I enjoy Gumbo\'s posts too, and this decision seems a bit out of place to me. People in this thread have let him know how they feel. It is up to him to decide if he got his metaphorical (and not literal) hug and if he feels like his return will contribute to the community here.

I just don\'t get this either. What is it about \"some\" posters that makes them feel they have to announce their departure?

I\'m serious. Some psychologist should do a study on why some people have to tell you they\'re leaving and others just leave.

And on top of it all, many of those who tell us they\'re leaving end up coming back.

I don\'t wish anyone on here to have a bad time or that they leave. As I have said before this site is best when more people are posting.

I guess I just don\'t understand the soap opera.

they want to feel important and put on the show..this is the second time in the past six months that he\'s done something like this..my take-everyone is not going to agree with you, and sometimes we are wrong in our views---if you can\'t handle that..good riddence.

and no-i have nothing against gumbo-most of his takes are thought out..I just disagree with his basic premise that AB should carry no blame and its\' every one else\'s fault. I\'ve been watching sports too long to buy into the espn-highlight film hype of any player.

I think Gumbo\'s view was this: AB should take much less blame than people were assigning to him, not that AB should take no blame. In fact, I\'m sure, looking back, you\'ll find many places where Gumbo did blame AB for a variety of things.

I\'ve had my own run-in with a moderator, JOESAM specifically, on a subject not necessarily related to football and I took him to be a fair individual who, while not in agreement with me, was willing to at least entertain my position. I really didn\'t expect much more from a private website nor should I have.

If this guy wants to leave, let him. But this final \"sayonara, fall on his sword, fade into the sunset\" post is a bit self-serving. This is a football website, not a soap opera.

Hey, I don\'t own or run this site. Halo and JoeSam must do what they think is best.

I just don\'t agree with everything that\'s going on.

On occassion - I do break some rules. And so does everyone at B&G. Quick, if you haven\'t broken any rules ... Raise you hand???

What I don\'t do, though, is run around making personal attacks.

Anyone been insulted by me? NO?

Anyone offended by any of my remarks? NO?

Do I argue with someone\'s opinion? YEP! Do I put up strong arguements? YEP!!

Do I make extreme statements when I feel they are necessary? YEP!

I dish out no more than I receive. Actually, I dish out much less than I receive.

And I\'m the antagonist?

I\'m tired of having to watch EVERY word I post.

All I want to do is express my opinions and question other folks opinions. And I want to do it respectfully. IMHO, I\'ve done just that.

Also, I don\'t want to be a robot. I want to have a little bit of fun. But not at the exprense of others. I wish no one any harm.

Sometimes I get the feeling that I\'m the bad guy.

I don\'t know how I became the bad guy.

I really think that someone needs to review HOW the rules are enforced. Either enforce the rules all the time or don\'t enforce them at all.

There are mixed signals being sent out. Even a blind man can see that.

All I\'ve tried to do is help.

If this doesn\'t get me banned, I\'ll be back. One day.

But, until that day, I hope the problems get worked out here at B&G. There\'s been nothing but problems lately. Or way too many anyway.

I\'m speaking out not because I\'m mad at Halo or JoeSam. They really haven\'t said that much to me. I just want to be heard. Whether I\'m wrong or right.
