Anthony Davis Injury: Updates on Pelicans Star's Back and Return

According to John Reid of The Times-Picayune, Anthony Davis is doubtful to return to the New Orleans Pelicans' game with the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night after suffering back spasms in the first half:

The star big man had played 11 minutes in the first half, scoring six points and grabbing three boards. The Pelicans were down 71-53.

The 2013-14 campaign has been all about building for the future for the Pelicans. At the forefront is Davis, and he hasn't disappointed. Coming into Wednesday night, he was averaging 21.3 points a game and 10.3 rebounds. ESPN.com indicates that his player efficiency rating of 27.0 was also fourth in the league.

From New Orleans' perspective, every caution must be taken with Davis at this stage.

The team is out of the playoff hunt in the Western Conference, so there isn't much to play for between now and the end of the season. You can't risk further injuring your best young player during what are largely meaningless games.

Back spasms don't appear to be a serious injury, though, so it's likely a matter of time before Davis is back on the court.
