Asik Unlikely to Return vs. Pistons

Sunday, Feb. 21

The Pelicans announced Asik is doubtful to return vs. Detroit.

Asik a Stabilizing Force for Pelicans Despite Lackluster Production

Although Asik doesn't put up big numbers while playing limited minutes alongside the often dominant Anthony Davis, he's still a notable piece of the Pelicans' rotation. He takes some pressure off the face of the franchise with reliable play in the paint when called upon.

He's battled various minor injuries in recent years. More notably, he missed an extended stretch during the 2013-14 campaign due to a lingering knee problem. He missed the start of the current season due to a calf issue suffered during training camp.

If he's forced back to the sidelines, Alexis Ajinca and Kendrick Perkins figure to split the extra time when New Orleans is using a true center. The combination of Davis and Ryan Anderson should handle a majority of the frontcourt work, though.

Since Asik is more of a complementary contributor, the Pelicans shouldn't suffer a major drop off. They are a more well-rounded team when he's on the court, though.
