Anthony Davis: DeMarcus Cousins Asked for My Achilles After Rib Injury

New Orleans Pelicans power forward Anthony Davis said teammate DeMarcus Cousins jokingly asked for one of his Achilles tendons while he was getting checked for a rib injury Tuesday night during the team's 121-116 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center.

Law Murray of ESPN.com passed along comments from Davis about the exchange with Cousins, who's been out of the lineup since January.

"DeMarcus told me at halftime, 'If you won't go back in, let me get your Achilles,'" he said. "I wanted to go out there and do whatever I can to help the team."

Davis exited the contest late in the second quarter but returned after halftime.

The 24-year-old MVP candidate finished with 41 points, 13 rebounds, three blocks, three steals and two assists in 37 minutes. It marked the ninth straight win for New Orleans, which has climbed to fourth in the highly competitive Western Conference.

His recent dominance provided a much-needed boost for the Pelicans without Cousins, who will miss the rest of the season. Third place and 10th place in the West are separated by just 4.5 games, leaving little margin for error among playoff contenders down the stretch.

Davis ranks second behind Houston Rockets shooting guard James Harden in player efficiency rating, according to ESPN.com.

While he returned to help push the Pelicans past the Clippers, he wasn't sure afterward whether he'd be available for Wednesday's clash with the Sacramento Kings at the Golden 1 Center, per Murray.

"We'll find out at 7 o'clock," Davis said.

Nikola Mirotic and Emeka Okafor would lead the frontcourt attack if he's unable to suit up.
