Re: Some Numbers Going Forward
It was probably a stroke of genuis to set up a Poli-Sci forum in a presidential election year though ... all the political rhetoric was bound to happen and at least it's being contained, for the most part, to this forum and not out on the rest of the board.

Dont get me wrong SloMo; I am all for everyones opinion. But it just blows my mind when I see people blinded by political BS that they can't see what this guy is doing to our country.
Take off your "Party" and "Race/color" colored glasses and see that the "Rainbow of the peace and prosperity" is actually a Nation on the road to ruin. |

Re: Some Numbers Going Forward
Obama inherited a mess, no clean up efforts to date, the said mess has only been spread around making a much bigger mess.

This is basically a containment area to keep it out of the rest of the forums. With out it we have no option to move a thread that turns political. This is a place for members to get things out of their system and off their chest with out being invasive to the rest of the forums. No one can protect the people from them selves. |

Re: Some Numbers Going Forward
The President inherited the worst mess since the Great depression. Unemployment peaked at 10% in Presidents Obama's first year+ in office. It's now 7.9%. Moving in the right direction. If it doesn't come down IT IS on the President and the Democrats. No other honest way to look at it. The deficit did continue to rise during President Obama's first term. All spending by definition had to be deficit spending because of the deficit Bush left. Some of the spending I agreed with and some I absolutely didn't. It's actually coming back down at the moment by the way. It will continue to come down due to the looming "fiscal cliff." It has to. It was going to if Romney was elected. The difference being, the bargain now in place to happen includes major cuts to entitlements, some defense cuts, and raised revenue. In my opinion, easily the best and fairest way possible and simply due to the President getting re-elected. If Romney were elected, if you believe his words, he would have gutted our safety nets in favor of more defense spending and tax cuts for the wealthy which made it impossible not to switch all of the burden to the working class. Not fair in my opinion. The majority of the electorate agreed. We'll see. Whatever happens the next four years is on President Obama. He's no longer campaigning. He can work the best deal for America. I think he will. Yes, Republicans can continue with a campaign of obstruction. How did that work out for them the last four years? Simply put, it was bad for them and bad for the nation. We'll see.

Re: Some Numbers Going Forward
We have to spend money on defense.
It is jobs. Jobs for America. From all that goes into making a plane. All that goes into making a tank or vehicle. The person that sews the uniforms. The person that makes the boots. GSA Vehicles. All are American made vehicles. The guy who is welding the ship. And even the guy who is mining for the material to make the metal for the vehicles. All the way down to the guy who sells the seeds to the farmer who grows the cotton that goes into the uniforms. And many more that are too long to mention. Defense cuts, hurt America. I think too many people see nukes and missles and bullets when they think Military and Defense. They don't see the jobs of the people who clean the offices, the civillians who do contract work. A lot goes into the Defense; I'll admit that. But we need it to. More people are employed by the Defense Department than there are Soldiers/Sailors/Airmen and Marines. If these Defense cuts happen, who are they going to cut? Yes, they will downsize the Military, but the ones who will really feel it the most is the people I mentioned above. And I hope you noticed I never mentioned a service member. These are all civilian empolyees in one way or another. |

Re: Some Numbers Going Forward
The level of defense cuts looming in the 'fiscal cliff' concern me. I remember the huge cuts made to defense in the '70s and how it negatively impacted the military community during the '80s. Those were some bleak times. I thought at that time it was a shame that a Non-Commissioned Officer with a spouse and 1-2 kids, serving their country, was so undercompensated as to qualify for food stamps and other government aid. I was a private making under $700-bucks-a-month, but at least I rated barracks & meals, the married NCO's did not and most would find second jobs when not deployed. The bases were falling apart and the barracks I lived in were actually condemned by the NC Health Department, there was actually a sign posted at the entrance,
Military life is hard, on the members as well as their families and the civilian population that supports them. I don't want to see the military community go back to the '70s/'80s. |

Re: Some Numbers Going Forward
Numbers going forward after a first term = I would rather forget the mess that was made in the last 4 years.
