Even without tackle Kyle Turley, who was traded to the Rams for a second-round pick in 2004, the team is confident the offensive line will be as good as ever.

The club believes Wayne Gandy is an upgrade at left tackle because he's a better pass blocker. At 6-4, 310, Gandy has a stronger base and isn't vulnerable to the bull rushes that Turley sometimes struggled against.

The easy-going Gandy also should be a upgrade in the locker room, where Turley's act had begun to wear on teammates. ...

If center Jerry Fontenot signs elsewhere, the team plans to move left guard Kendyl Jacox to center and slide right tackle Spencer Folau to left guard. Victor Riley would start at right tackle.

If the Saints go that route, look for them to become a righthanded running team behind Riley and right guard LeCharles Bentley.

At one time, it was thought Bentley would be the heir apparent to Fontenot at center, but coach Jim Haslett wants to keep him at right guard for at least one more year.

Haslett doesn't want to make Bentley learn a new position in his second season and likes having him at guard, where he can match up against Bucs dominant tackles Warren Sapp and Anthony McFarland.
