Vote to Re-Name the Saints

Its been a long running debate over the years on whether the New Orleans Saints should be renamed to better represent their larger fanbase. Here is your chance to give your input:

Because, now more than ever, the Saints are bigger than New Orleans. They represent so much more than the city. They represent a state, and the entire region for that matter. Ask the Cardinals, why they are not the Phoenix Cardinals anymore, or ask the Patriots, why the are no longer the Boston Patriots? By expanding the name, you make the others from the region or the state feel more inclusive, after all its not just those in New Orleans, who support the Saints, its the entire region.

Just like the NEW JERSEY Giants and NEW JERSEY Jets should be renamed to the NORTHEAST CORRIDOR Giants/Jets?

Get a grip, and not on your wanker.

Examples

The overall recent trend in the NFL is to name teams after a large inclusive region or state, rather than a smaller city.
Examples:
New England Patriots
Arizona Cardinals
Minnesota Vikings
Tennessee Titans
Carolina Panthers
Even the newest team, the Houston "Texans", put a larger flavor on their team.

RE: Examples

Yeah I get your point mjf150, but what I think people are saying is New Orleans has the recognizable name, not Louisiana. It would be like renaming the Corvette to the Chevrolet speedster or something like that. New Orleans has it's own unique name people know, and people know it more then ever now, believe me. :?

saintfan 09-16-2005 02:53 PM

Dallas Cowboys
Houston Texans
Miami Dolphins
Denver Broncos
San Francisco 49ers
San Diego Chargers
Atlanta Falcons
Pittsburg Steelers
Baltimore Ravens
Jacksonville Jaguars
Chicago Bears
Green Bay Packers
Detroit Lions
Buffalo Bills
Cincinatti Bengals
Cleveland Browns
Kansas City Chiefs
Oakland Raiders
Tampa Bay Buccaneers

...

and BY GOD the NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

Questions?
Thank you for your time.

I love New Orleans it is, was, and always will be a wonderful city. But unlike many of the cities that you've listed above, it, alone, can not substain an NFL team. New Orleans does not generate enough revenue to do so. It requires the support from the entire state including our tax dollars.

WhoDat 09-16-2005 04:24 PM

Uh - Green Bay, Wisconsin - population, 102,313. Think others from around the area help support that team?

http://greenbay.areaconnect.com/statistics.htm

The Saints aren't unique in this sense. They are only unique in that their owner is, uh, I'll say "persuasive" enough, and the officials of the state in which they play are, uh, "generous" enough to give them direct state funding.

Whodat...got a question. Do the Packers have state funding? How do they have such a huge fan base and reside in such a small community? Wisconsin dosen't have that many people anyway....shouldn't the Saints try to build like the Pack does?

I realize that the Packers have been to Superbowls and are always at least moderatly successful....but if the Saints make a run a the SB this season or at least get deep into the playoffs....we should be able to rope some more fans...right? This would help keep the Saints in NO and get some more publicity.

Yep , Robert McNair probably spends many a sleepless night scratching his balls trying to figure out where he heard that name before .....

1952 Dallas Texans

Record: 1 - 11 - 0
Head Coach: Jim Phelan

This talk of renaming he Saints in just nonsense. We should not even be discussing it.

SaintStoneyMount 09-18-2005 11:30 AM

how about the New Orleans Saints. Real simple. The New Orleans Saints. I like that. New Orleans Saints. Yeah..and just so that no one else feels left out. We'll have like caravans with players coaches and team administrators to travel throughout the state and the gulf region to garner support. What do you think

Agreed. It's kind of incensative. I mean not only did people lose their homes, their family members lose their lives, but the team has an owner who is about to play games with them. It's hard right now. If you don't live around here you may be sympathetic, but living in south Louisiana is tough right now.

Saints are not moving or changing their name.

They are the only team that is publicly held. As I understand it, their fans can actually buy stock in the team. They own their team and they have a great stadium experience. So, their model is totally unique and will probably never be repeated.
