Coaching Change

This one has bothered me from square 1

Mike Riley - assistant head coach / secondary . This really really bothers me .

Here is why : Mike Riley has been around enough high powered offenses , to put some great plays on the board for sure .

The current offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy , while being well liked has never been more then a quarterbacks coach . He has good working knowledge and potential but has he really put the offense into the top 10 week after week ??

Do not get me wrong , I much prefer a quarterbacks coach as an offensive coordinator , rather then a special teams coach . At least quarterback coaches are familiar with throwing the ball .

With Riley we have a successful offensive coordinator , turned successful NCAA head coach , to not so successful NFL head coach .

Does anyone other then me , see this as taking Norv Turner and making him the defensive line coach . SOMETHING STINKS HERE .

Now we could all debate the upgraded offense over years past , lets not . Mc Carthy was brought in as an offensive coordinator , who was going to install the West Coast offense in New Orleans , that experiment I think is over . Its been tweaked so many times I am not sure what it is , but here is the point , with all the potential and all the players , Mc Carthy has yet to WOW us with his offensive coaching ability . Vanilla still seems to be the flavor in New Orleans .

Could Mike Riley have been brought into New Orleans to replace Mc Carthy , should the offense not get on track this year ??? He certainly has the credentials to do so .

I think it\'s more like Riley will replace McCarthy should McCarthy depart for a head coaching job. McCarthy\'s name has been knocked around a few times for several of the vacant head coaching jobs in the NFL so the Saints may just be covering their arses. Plus this gives Riley time to learn the players and system.

This has to be a make or break year for mccarthy. Riley isnt going to sit back and be the secondary coach forever. He will have other opportunities. If mccarthy gets things on track fine than he stays if not time to change the plan. Mccarthy has the players intact to be a very good offense. If he cant do it now he never will.

So it could stand to reason Riley might be the offensive coordinator going into the 2003 football season ?? Given the fact Mc Carthy either stumbles or takes a head coaching vacancy .

Might explain the assistant head coach title .

I wonder if Terry Bradshaws comment \" Any intelligent offensive coordinator with a good offense would make Marc Bulger a better player\", is pointing to the fact that others around the league are suspicious of Mike Mc Carthy\'s coaching and play calling abilities ??
