RE: New Defensive Coordinator

Saints hire Gary Gibbs as defensive coordinator

By Mike Triplett
Staff writer

One-time LSU defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs has accepted the job as defensive coordinator on Saints coach Sean Payton’s staff.

Gibbs, 53, has never been an NFL coordinator and has only been an assistant coach in the league for four years. He was the Oklahoma Sooners’ head coach from 1989 to ’94, then took six years off before serving as a defensive coordinator at Georgia in 2000 and LSU in 2001. The Tigers won the SEC championship game and the Sugar Bowl that season under second-year head coach Nick Saban.

Gibbs then joined the Cowboys’ staff in 2002 under former head coach Dave Campo as linebackers coach. He was retained, along with defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and others, when Bill Parcells became Dallas’ coach in 2003.

Gibbs has earned solid reviews coaching a linebacker corps that is considered one of the Cowboys’ strengths. Last month he interviewed for the Texas A&M defensive coordinator job, but he reportedly turned it down.

Yeahhhhhhhhh

Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!! i really see that tom benson is trying to win this coming year I really see us going to the playoffs with rookie QB name MATT LEINART GO SAINTS GO

maximkat 01-23-2006 12:50 PM

thank god, its about time we've dropped that bum venturi, where is dbl i wanna see the x on the bus so i know its official :)

TalmanGardnerCousin 01-23-2006 12:56 PM

So who's left to get off our bus for as coach's

TheDeuce 01-23-2006 01:07 PM

What's FireVenturi going to do with his name? FireBenson?

TalmanGardnerCousin 01-23-2006 01:09 PM

yea thats a good 1 it looks like alot of people have to change their names now but you know what thats a good thing

TheDeuce 01-23-2006 01:43 PM

What have people heard about this guy? Good choice? Bad choice? I guess the Cowboys' linebackers have played pretty well the last few years (he did turn Dat Nguyen into a stud). But he's coming from a 3-4 defense. Anybody think we'll change to a 3-4? Use Grant and Smith on the end with Brian Young in the middle? I don't think that would work. We don't have nearly the right kind of personnel for that. Whatever, I guess this guy knows what he's doing; we couldn't say that for Venturi.

mjf150 01-23-2006 01:53 PM

Where's the school bus? Two down, two to go.

TallySaint 01-23-2006 01:54 PM

Nick Saban could make an addition to the Dolphins' defensive staff. He has offered a job to longtime NFL assistant and close friend Rick Venturi. Venturi was with New Orleans last season and has spent time with Indianapolis, once serving as an interim head coach.

I definitely don't mind seeing Gibbs. Mainly because it isn't Venturi.

gfanaticlsu 01-23-2006 03:14 PM

According to ESPN, when he was defensive coordinator at Oklahoma Univ, his defense ranked #1 in the nation 3yrs in a row prior to him taking over as the head coach.

AllSaints- I've asked you repeatedly about you're incessant use of long one word posts. If you cannot contain yourself, I'll make it a point to do it for you, and you will not have much fun on this site as a result.

If I have to follow you around and wipe your ass for you, I'd prefer just to cut the problem out alltogether.

AllSaints 01-23-2006 03:54 PM

Nice avatar BnB. Are you a Johnny Cash fan?
I know it's off the sub, but we will return to your regularly scheduled programming as soon as possible.

BlackandBlue 01-23-2006 04:13 PM

Want to keep pushing me? Everytime you do it, it ****s up the forum, and makes it hard to read. Then, i have to follow you around and fix it everytime.

We can all get along, as long as you can get along. And this is not open for discussion. Final warning.

BlackandBlue 01-23-2006 04:23 PM

I don't ask nicely. Consider yourself on probation.

This is a great lesson. If I ask you to do something, I usually have a reason. Don't make me ask the same thing three times, I hate having to repeat myself. I'll reactivate your account in a few days, once you've had time to blow off some steam. Use your head, people.

And yes, I do like Johnny, Willie, and the rest of the crew :D

gandhi1007 01-23-2006 06:04 PM

Thank god!! A defnsive coach who can actually coach, the #2 draft pick (Leinart), & a draft deep in LB talent for us in the 2nd round!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The football gods are smiling down on us!!!!!!!

CheramieIII 01-23-2006 06:59 PM

Damn, Dolphins got Saban head coach, Mularkey OC and Capers DC. If they can't win with 3 coaches with head coaching experience and win next year. I would fire whoever's idea it was to hire those three.

Back to the story.

I love the Gibbs hire and it was definitely time to get rid of Venturi. Now what are we going to do on the offensive side of the ball? Lets do it quick so we can get the base in place before the draft and make some really good selections, oh and draft "The Hawk". That was for you Deuce.

Hey BnB, I walk the line too, sometimes it is so fine that I can't even see it. Thanks for taking care of the site. You still da man.

D_it_up 01-23-2006 07:03 PM

I have a feeling that whoever the hire as OC will just be holding a title. I'm sure he'll have some input with the offense, but I expect Payton to be calling the majority of the plays. So we could hire "Ralph" the Wonder Llama, and it would carry as much weight as hiring someone notable.

CheramieIII 01-23-2006 07:22 PM

Who do you think it will be and who's left anyway?

gandhi1007 01-23-2006 07:26 PM

I think we could pull someone out of college. Like D_it_up said, Payton will be calling the shots anyway.

CheramieIII 01-23-2006 07:30 PM

So who would you guys like to see" How about Pat Hill? Is he still available? We could offer the position to Pete Carroll. He could help mentor Payton and if, if, if, if the Saints pull a Haslett and draft Leinart he would be in a very good position.

D_it_up 01-23-2006 07:35 PM

IF Carroll were to take another NFL position, it sure wouldn't be as a coordinator again. I believe he's holding out for the NFL to move back to LA and taking a head coaching position there.

Draft Leinart.

Coming around are we Cher? Haha I'm just messing with you. But I am glad about this hire. If we get Hawk, I think Gibbs will be able to bring the most out of him, and the defense as a whole. Even without Hawk, though, I think that Gibbs means business and can start turning this D into a top 10 D consistently.

Not trying to sound like a jackass or anything, but I don't think it really matters. Payton has said that he'll be calling the shots. The OC will most likely focus on the running game, offensive line, or some other offensive position besides the QB (which will be Payton's job).

Hell no, just trying to cover my arse just in case. I would rather have the LB first because we have overlooked that position since Hasbeen arrived. I guess he thought he could turn a no one into a someone and it didn't work. If we take Lienart first I would take Jackson, Sims or Carpenter with the 34 pick and Dvoracek DT with our 4th rounder.

CheramieIII 01-23-2006 08:56 PM

Martz, Carthon or one of those high point scoring college coaches would be a good fit. I think Martz could handle just the offense without any other medical problems. You know that stress thing is hard on the heart and if you just want a mouthpiece Carthon on any quality college headcoach or offensive coordinator will work.

Here's another DT that could drop to the 2nd-4th round: Larry Dibbles-Texas

I like Dvoracek, but if Dibbles is still there, we gotta' get him. Dude is INTENSE!!!!!!

P.S.- I'd take Martz as an O.C. any day. That's one thing St. Louis was never lacking in under Martz-OFFENSE!!!!!!!!

CheramieIII 01-23-2006 09:13 PM

Cam Cameron from the Charges and Ken Whisenhut from the Steelers still available.

gfanaticlsu 01-24-2006 09:55 AM

What is speculated is that he will not hire a traditional OC, instead he will hire a passing game coordinator and a running game coordinator. Hey, maybe Payton and the other two can come up with some bad azz offensive game plans.... Hey, you know what they say....." Three heads are better than one"

Cher, when was the last time we didn't overlook the QB position? We haven't had a franchise QB since.... I don't even know, I probably wasn't born yet.

FatiusJeebs 01-24-2006 10:21 AM

I still think we should trade down a spot or two....and pick Hawk. With this new DC there is nothing I would love more than to see the Saints run a 3-4 defense again. Im pretty sure no one has forgotten how good we were when we did run the 3-4.

DblBogey 01-24-2006 10:25 AM

I heard everyone was looking for the bus, well here it is, PTL. Now it is down to Benson and Brooks, just keep praying.

I'm also sure we don't have nearly the kind of personnel to run a 3-4. We don't have a true NT for a 3-4. We don't have enough good linebackers for a 4-3, much less for a 3-4. I would like to see it to, but we don't have the players for it.

Euphoria 01-24-2006 12:01 PM

I think at this point we are trading down... Payton knows what this guy is capable of especially with good LB's. Its obvious we need an elite defense to win so starting there and slowly building the OL looks like what is going to happen.
