RE: New Defensive Coordinator
Saints hire Gary Gibbs as defensive coordinator
By Mike Triplett Staff writer One-time LSU defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs has accepted the job as defensive coordinator on Saints coach Sean Paytonââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢s staff. Gibbs, 53, has never been an NFL coordinator and has only been an assistant coach in the league for four years. He was the Oklahoma Soonersââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ head coach from 1989 to ÃƒÆ’Ã‚Æ’Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¢ÃƒÆ’Ã‚Â¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚â‚¬Ã‚Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¬ÃƒÆ ’¢â€žÂ¢94, then took six years off before serving as a defensive coordinator at Georgia in 2000 and LSU in 2001. The Tigers won the SEC championship game and the Sugar Bowl that season under second-year head coach Nick Saban. Gibbs then joined the Cowboysââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ staff in 2002 under former head coach Dave Campo as linebackers coach. He was retained, along with defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and others, when Bill Parcells became Dallasââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢ coach in 2003. Gibbs has earned solid reviews coaching a linebacker corps that is considered one of the Cowboysââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ strengths. Last month he interviewed for the Texas A&M defensive coordinator job, but he reportedly turned it down. Yeahhhhhhhhh |

What have people heard about this guy? Good choice? Bad choice? I guess the Cowboys' linebackers have played pretty well the last few years (he did turn Dat Nguyen into a stud). But he's coming from a 3-4 defense. Anybody think we'll change to a 3-4? Use Grant and Smith on the end with Brian Young in the middle? I don't think that would work. We don't have nearly the right kind of personnel for that. Whatever, I guess this guy knows what he's doing; we couldn't say that for Venturi.
